A Brief Introduction of Institute for China’s Neighboring Economies

The Institute for China Neighboring Economies of USST (hereinafter referred to as ICNE), registered as “the Country and Regional Research Center” with the approval of the Ministry of Education, was founded in June 2017. The target countries of academic research include 10 countries in Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia, namely, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Mongolia, Russia, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

With the support from the University and the Business School of USST, ICNE has actively developed all-round cooperation with domestic and foreign research institutions and relevant government offices since 2007. Through holding forums and joint scientific research projects, etc., ICNE has conducted much basic research on Greater Mekong Sub-region cooperation (GMS) in Indo-China Peninsula and the development of Tumen River Basin in northeast Asia. Over the past ten years, with a series of forums being held in succession, such as “International Forum on Industrial Cooperation and Development among China, Japan and Vietnam (Shanghai 2007)”, “Forum on GMS Mechanism Vietnam (Da Nang 2008)”, “Conference on China--Mekong Basin Development and Cooperation: Review and Outlook (Beijing 2009)”, “Advanced Forum on the greater Mekong sub-regional development (Kunming 2009)”, and “Conference on the Northeast Asia and the Tumen River Basin Development (Yanji, 2013)”, ICNE has increasingly established closer academic relationship with Kunming University of Science and Technology, Meiji Gakuin University, the Ministry of Science and Technology of PRC and so forth. So far, nearly a hundred of papers and academic works such as Economic Study in Great Mekong Region, etc. were accomplished through a range of research projects sponsored by Soft Science, and Supporting Planning for Science & Technology of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Yunnan Provincial Education Committee as well as Shanghai Municipal Finance Bureau.

Over 70 master’s degree holders in international trade, international business, regional economics and logistics engineering have graduated from ICNE. For their outstanding professionalism and cooperative spirits, they all enjoy a high reputation in high-end service industry such as finance, trade and consulting, which demonstrates the uniqueness of our talent cultivation pattern. Based on the stable academic channels with several major neighboring countries such as Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and several domestic research institutions, the future research activity of ICNE will be more fruitful and the talent training model by integrating scientific research and teaching will better satisfy the needs of the new type talents for “the Belt and Road Initiative”.

In the future, ICNE will actively integrate more research power from different disciplines such as international trade, regional economics, industrial economics, international business in the Business School of USST and some adjunct professors outside USST according to the construction requirements for the “Country and Regional Research Center” of the Ministry of Education. Focusing on the grand economic layout of “the Belt and Road Initiative”, and the new situation, new issues of China’s neighboring regions or relevant research fields, ICNE will make extensive efforts on the interdisciplinary and cross-regional academic cooperation so that it can achieve its goal as being a cultivation base of high-end special talents serving the economic development of the Yangtze River Delta and the whole country, and an internationally known academic think tank as well.
