From November 1st to 2nd, Edward, President of the Cuba Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industrial Group Corporation, and Dioniso, Vice President of Universidad de La Habana (UH), paid a visit to USST. President of USST Ding Xiaodong and Vice President of USST Liu Ping met the guests together with Nestor, Consulate General of Cuba in Shanghai. The heads of the Science and Technology Department, the International Affairs Office, the School of Optical-Electrical & Computer Engineering and the School of Medical Instrument & Food Engineering along with the USST Technology Transfer Company joined in the talks.
Long before the 10th meeting of the joint work group on biotechnology was organized by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), was held at La Habana in Cuba. Authorized and entrusted by President Ding Xiaodong, USST the Technology Transfer Company, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Cuba Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industrial Group Corporation. USST became the first university in Shanghai to carry out a collaboration with the Cuba Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industrial Group Corporation. Through this visit, both sides further communicated with each other regarding the collaborative direction and program of promoting the ‘Memorandum of Understanding’.
President Ding Xiaodong noted that as an important university for science and technology in Shanghai, USST would seize the opportunity of building a local high-level university to continue strengthening distinctive characteristics of running the schools, especially for interdisciplinary research in the cross-fields of medicine and engineering. They planned to work together to find suitable collaborative programs with the Cuba Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industrial Group Corporation, and established a cutting-edge joint laboratory in the top level in the industry.
During a visit to the key laboratory at the School of Optical-Electrical and Computer Engineering, the delegation showed much interest in PCR microfluidics, the world’ s first positioning capsule endoscopy and skin cancer treatment based on nano-scale drug carriers and provided collaborative requirements for quick detection of diseases like dengue and hepatitis. When they visited the Institute of Rehabilitation Engineering and Technology, they sang high praises for the rehabilitative products like the complex rehabilitation training system based on the wheelchair, the intelligent prosthetic knee, the lower limb exoskeleton robot that supports walking and rehabilitation practice and the separable intelligent rehabilitation nursing bed.
Besides, the Cuba Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industrial Group Corporation has built collaborative relationships in science and technology with UH. During this visit, Dioniso established an official interschool collaborative relationship with Liu Ping for both universities. Both sides established an office and carried out specific and detailed talks regarding student exchange programs and collaboration in science and technology between teachers, particularly about cross-collaboration of biotechnology and medical engineering.
