Head Teachers Move against the COVID-19 Epidemic

April 15, 2020

Since the start of the epidemic, USST head teachers have been concerned about their students and delivered their love and tenderness via Wechat, phone and text messages. As part of society, they take the initiative to throw themselves into the prevention and control of the epidemic as volunteers, working really hard to shoulder their responsibilities.
Li Xiujun, female, associate professor from Department of Civil Engineering, School of Environment and Architecture, 12-year head teacher, and now head teacher of Mechanics Class 918.
”Even if I am not at school, I feel like Li is always accompanying us, so how I relax my attention on learning?” one of her student told us, letting us know Li’s special concern for her students during the COVID-19 epidemic.” Li keeps in touch with students in class QQ group, learning about their health, and guiding them to protect themselves from virus infection in a scientific way. At the same time, she pays close attention to students’ studies, guiding them to continue learning while they are staying at home and offering support and encouragement to several students who have encountered academic difficulties. Li also plays a role of an excellent volunteer in the battle against the epidemic. She has voluntarily taken part in the community services team for the epidemic prevention and control. Her neighbor, who returned back from Xiaogan City, Hubei Province must stay at home, imposing self-isolation and make preparations for some vegetables, fruits and other daily necessities, so she often offers to lend a helping hand, going to the market with double purchase lists. She also has also helped to give out entry & exit passes, and register the information of returnees to Shanghai.

Chen Yingyan, female, technical director in charge of the Comprehensive Management Center of the Finance Office, head teacher of Class 907, Electronic and Information Engineering.
At the Lantern Festival, February 8, 2020, all the 33 students from Class 907, Electronic and Information Engineering received red packets from Chen, their head teacher. Such a pleasant surprise made others feel very warm at heart. Ever since Chen took charge of the class, she has showed great care for each student. To remember each one’s name, she asked them to have their photos taken and printed, and give them to her with their names, student numbers, and addresses written on the backs of the photos. Thanks to her familiarity with each student after her past meticulous work, she was able to call the parents of the two students from Hubei instantly and remind them to guard against infection as soon as the epidemic broke out.

Yuan Guibin, male, adviser of the College of Science, head teacher of Class 2, Applied Physics.
As secretary of the Communist Party Branch for the undergraduates of Physics and Chemistry, Yuan Guibin often held online meetings of a democratic life during the epidemic. By means of online Q&A, he spread the knowledge about COVID-19 prevention to enhance students’ awareness and competence of scientific prevention and control. As an “emergency liaison during the winter holidays” and “temporary head teacher for students who stayed on campus,” he asked each one to report their health and give mental consolation to them. In addition, he collected students’ records about their health conditions and thereabouts, and reminded students to report their health conditions on Welink every day. He kept in contact with the students in Hubei and became the messenger and guard for the school’s prevention and control of the epidemic. When he worked as a community volunteer, he, apart from assisting in giving out passes and taking people’s temperatures, persuaded his neighbors not to gather together or go out too frequently, patiently relieving their anxieties. He also volunteered to help the community with the delivery services for people under quarantine.
