Team Led by Professor Zhang Hua published A Paper in Cell: STAR Protocols

October 29, 2022

Recently, the team led by professor Zhang Hua,School of Energy and Power Engineering, USST together with professor Wang Ruzhu, Shanghai Jiaotong University published a paper titled “Protocol for atmospheric water harvesting using in situ polymerization honeycomb hygroscopic polymers” in Cell: STAR Protocols. They describe a streamlined experimental approach for the synthesis of the honeycomb-optimized hydrogel-based composite absorbent (PCLG) by in situ polymerization. They produced sorbent exhibits ultra-high absorption/desorption capacity per unit volume and low-temperature desorption. Li Chunfeng, a graduate from SEPE was the first author; USST was the first unit; Wang Jiayun, a young teacher from SEPE was the corresponding author; Deng Chaohe, professor Zhanghua and professor Wang Ruzhu were the co-authors.

AWH offers a practical and sustainable solution to the shortage of water. In recent years, the high adsorption capacity, high adsorption density, and cycle stability hydrogel sorbents have been considered for the use of AWH. The protocol develops a composite sorbent loaded with hygroscopic salts, lithium chloride (LiCl), based on hydrogel, acrylamide monomer (AM), and carbon nanotubes (CNT). The protocol provides a streamlined experimental method for designing and developing gel-based composite adsorbents.

This research is sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Shanghai Sailing Program, Shanghai Morning Light Project, and the Central Guidance on LocalScience and Technology Development Fund of Shanghai City.
STAR (Structured Transparent Accessible Reproducible) Protocols is an open-access peer-reviewed protocol journal from Cell Press that publishes step-by-step experimental and computational protocols from all areas of life, health, earth, and physical sciences. STAR Protocols aims to make the daily work of the scientific researcher easier by providing complete, authoritative, and consistent instructions on how to conduct experiments.
