Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Assistive Devices(SERCAD)

Institute of Rehabilitation Engineering and Technology belongs to School of Medical Instrument and Food Engineering, which is a special and dominant discipline of USST. School of Medical Instrument and Food Engineering is the first independent set specialized school on medical instrument with long history. There are one doctor station of biomedical engineering and one Post-doctoral station in the school. The major of rehabilitation engineering belongs to the school is one of bases of personnel training for undergraduate students on rehabilitation.
The discipline direction of rehabilitation engineering in USST develop rapidly recently. Nowadays, we have the first provincial-level engineering research center relies on universities in China named Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Assistive Devices (SERCAD). We also construct the Key Laboratory of Neural-functional Information and Rehabilitation Engineering of the Ministry of Civil Affairs together with the other research instruments and universities. There are a series of outstanding achievements on rehabilitation engineering personnel training, scientific research and social services that ensure our platform become one of the largest high-level research bases of rehabilitation in China. In addition, USST has become a supporting institution for academic organizations in the field of rehabilitation, which including Committee of Rehabilitation Engineering of Shanghai Society of Biomedical Engineering, Specialty Committee of Rehabilitation Devices of China, and Committee of Rehabilitation Robotics of SIAER. Meanwhile, USST is also the vice chairman Unit of specialty Committee of Rehabilitation Devices of Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering. In December, 2017, USST, as an affiliated unit, established the largest academic organization of industry-university-research medicine of rehabilitation engineering in China -- the special committee for technical transformation and industrial promotion of China rehabilitation medical association. Currently, it is the current chairman unit of the Asian rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology alliance.
Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering. In December, 2017, USST, as an affiliated unit, established the largest academic organization of industry-university-research medicine of rehabilitation engineering in China -- the special committee for technical transformation and industrial promotion of China rehabilitation Medical Association (CARM). And now, USST is the president unit of the Coalition of Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology of Asia    (i-CREATe Asia).
USST has launched and co-hosted twice Asia's most influential rehabilitation engineering conferences in China which are i-CREATe 2010 and i-CREATe 2018. USST also co-sponsored and co-organized the first international conference on rehabilitation medicine engineering in China and the first China (Shanghai) rehabilitation devices, technology and industry development forum. In addition, USST is also one of initiate and found institutes of the first rehabilitation engineering magazine in China named ‘Journal of International Rehabilitation Engineering and Devices’.
Now SERCAD has a team of over 20 people, including 5 professors, 8 associate professors, and 8 lecturers who are all majored in rehabilitation engineering. This wonderful team has developed a series of innovative rehabilitation devices and technologies. It has applied more than 100 patents of invention, such as the upper limb rehabilitation robots, intelligent nursing bed, intelligent electric wheelchairs, intelligent functional electrical stimulation system and upper limb prosthesis with dynamic electrical control technology. Over 60 have been authorized. The total amount of patent transfer has been over tens of millions of RMB, which tops us among research institutions.
We have developed a series of innovation on rehabilitation devices, equipment and relative technologies, such as the upper limb rehabilitation robotics, intelligent nursing bed, intelligent electric wheelchairs, intelligent functional electrical stimulation system and upper limb prosthesis with dynamic scale electrical control technology. We have applied more than 100 invention patents (including over 60 authorized invention patents). We also obtained a series of high-level scientific research achievements with high application value. We have complete total amount to tens of millions RMB on patent transformation and become one of the most research institutions on technology transformation.
