Discipline

Biomedical Engineering is a new and emerging inter-discipline of science, engineering, medicine, biology, etc., serving the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of diseases. Medical care is closely related to the survival and development of human beings and the quality of life. The development of medical and health care is of strategic significance to national security, social stability and national existence.

University of Shanghai for Science and Technology launched its study in the field of biomedical engineering within the disciplinary framework of refrigeration and optics more than 30 years ago and had turned out a number of talents. In 2004, the Biomedical Engineering Research Institute was established, providing a good opportunity for the rapid development of the biomedical engineering discipline. Within 8 years, it accomplished its disciplinary layout, ranging from the first-level master’s degree in biomedical engineering to the postdoctoral research station

With the constant support from Shanghai Municipal government and USST for many years, the biomedical engineering had been successively accredited as key discipline, 085 Connotation Construction program, first-class discipline, and Plateau discipline since 2006. Consequently, more than 20 talents had been introduced and trained. Meanwhile, platforms such as the Modern Minimally Invasive Medical Devices and Technology Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education----the first of its kind at a local university of Shanghai, two Engineering Centers of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, National Continuing Education Base for Technical Professionals, etc., were established one after another each year in a row.

In the past 5 years, this program has enrolled 57 doctoral students, 34 of them have been awarded Ph.D. degree. More than 800 master-degree postgraduates have been enrolled and over 400 students have been awarded master degree. It has also turned out 2,500 undergraduate students. So far its postgraduate students have published 573 academic papers, and applied for 95 patents (68 of them have been granted patent). The faculty has won 2 provincial and ministerial teaching achievement awards, and has 24 textbooks published. Of all the courses offered to the students of this program, two of them have been rated as National Quality Courses, and 8 have been rated as provincial and ministerial level Quality Courses. For their excellent performance, 3 teams were awarded the honorary title as the provincial and ministerial level Excellent Teaching Teams.

The four distinctive directions of the discipline are:

1. Minimally invasive and intelligent medical devices and technologies. This direction is aimed at the hotspots in this field, namely minimally invasive intervention/implantation of medical devices, minimally invasive surgical and surgical instruments, minimally invasive treatment of tumors, etc., to break through some of the key technologies and achieve the transformation of results.

2. Biomaterials and tissue engineering. Design and development of biomedical materials for the production of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular stents, catheters, and various surgical instruments, and research on cryopreservation techniques and devices for artificial tissues.

3. Medical imaging technology. This direction mainly studies medical spectrum imaging, tissue spectroscopy, medical imaging precision instruments, etc., providing a reliable theoretical basis and technology for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

4. Biomedical information and processing. Basic research will be carried out on the pathogenesis of human diseases, bio-omics, medical health information, etc., laying the foundation for the diagnosis of diseases

In the past five years, the faculty of this program has undertaken more than 100 government-sponsored research projects of the national, provincial and ministerial level, and nearly 170 non-government sponsored projects, with a total research funding of over 90 million yuan. More than 700 papers have been published, and over 200 of them appeared in SCI/EI journals.

Altogether the faculty of this program has won 10 awards, including the first prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award. They own 200 invention patents, accumulating fund up to nearly 30 million yuan from the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. At the end of 2017, the results of the fourth round of discipline accreditation were announced that the biomedical engineering discipline of USST was ranked the15th, moving two forward from its place in the third round of discipline accreditation.
