Laboratory

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Modern Optics and Systems, approved by Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, was founded in 2006. The Director of the key laboratory is Professor Zhuang Songlin, the academic leader of the optical engineering discipline (a first-level discipline offering doctoral program), academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of China Instrument and Control Society, Director of Shanghai Instrument and Control Society, and member of Shanghai CPPCC. The laboratory has successfully passed the accreditation by Shanghai Science and Technology Commission in August 2008, November 2011, November 2014, and December 2017. It was rated as the Excellent Laboratory in the 2014 and 2017 respectively and ranked the first of the laboratories in the engineering field. The accreditations have boosted the development of the laboratory, and helped it build scientific research bases, align with international standards, gather top talents, innovate management models, and support the construction of high-level universities.

Infrastructure facilities

The laboratory has developed rapidly in recent years with the financial support from USST. The total investment has reached about 90 million yuan in the past three years. So far the key laboratory covers a total area of 12,000 square meters. After years of construction, the laboratory can meet the experimental requirements of the ongoing research. But it is still endeavoring to satisfy the new research needs from the discipline. The total value of the instruments in the key laboratory has reached more than 160 million yuan. There are more than 100 sets of large-scale instruments in the key laboratory, the value of each set exceeding 0.3 million yuan.

The laboratory boasts a research team of more than 80 fixed staff, covering the multi-disciplines of optics, materials, instruments, control, computers, etc. The research team, with academicians as its PIs, and all kind of high-level talents as its backbone, is full of innovative vitality and collaborative spirit. Among them, more than 30 are doctoral supervisors, more than 40% are the staff returned from abroad, and 60% of them are young people aged 25-39. The laboratory has been leading Shanghai in both faculty construction, research project development and scientific research achievements, even holding a dominant position in China.

Under the advocacy of “Made in China 2025” and “the Belt and Road Initiative”, the optical engineering discipline is facing new challenges and opportunities for further improvement and development. Shanghai Key Laboratory of Modern Optics and Systems has been constantly expanding its research directions by enhancing interdisciplinary integration to keep up with the development of the times. The optical engineering discipline, to which this laboratory is affiliated, is the earliest in Shanghai to offer a doctoral program. It has remained the leading position in the field of optical engineering in Shanghai and even the whole country. The discipline has been listed as a national key discipline (cultivation stage), Shanghai key discipline. It was conferred the right to establish the post-doctoral mobile station in optical engineering in 2007. One of the doctoral dissertations was selected as the National Top 100 Excellent Doctoral Dissertations in 2009. The discipline was awarded the first prize of China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Progress Award in 2009. In 2010, it won the honorary title 2007-2009 Shanghai Model Collective. In 2012, it won the second prize of China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Award, China International Industry Fair Excellent Exhibition Award. In 2013, it won the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation nomination, and China International Industry Fair Excellent Exhibition Award (Silver Award). In 2014, it won the honorary title of “Pioneer Worker”, the third prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, and the second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of Machinery Industry Federation. In 2015, it won the third prize of Shanghai Technology Invention Award and the Science and Technology Award of Machinery Industry Federation. In 2016, it won the second prize of the Science and Technology Award of the Machinery Industry Federation, a third prize and two awards of excellent exhibits of the China International Industry Fair. In the 2017 National Science and Technology Week “Open research institutions and universities to the public” activities, it was awarded the honorary certificates by the Ministry of Science and Technology for its active participation, meticulous organization and remarkable achievements. In addition, the laboratory is also the director unit of the China Instrument and Control Society, and is the affiliated institution of National Optical and Photonics Standardization Technical Committee, the National Optical Society Engineering Optical Professional Committee, the China Instrument and Control Society Optical Instrument Branch, and the China Instrument and Meter Industry Association Optical Instrument Branch.
