On the afternoon of March 1, Gerardo Guillén Nieto, an academician at the Cuban Academy of Sciences and Director of the Biomedical Research Department of the Cuban Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, paid a visit to USST. Liu Ping, the Vice-President, introduced to the guest the school, the interdisciplinary research in medicine and engineering that is underway, and the related study in such biomedical fields as medical optical instruments, minimally invasive medical devices, as well as rehabilitation medical devices. After that, Prof. Gerardo Guillén Nieto gave an introduction to the research of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in cancer detection and treatment and other fields. With still much room for cooperation, the two sides both held that the establishment of joint laboratories as well as bilateral visits and exchanges would quicken the cooperation between China and Cuba in biomedicine to solve the pathogenesis and treatment of major diseases, which have been afflicting human beings for quite a long time.
Prof. Gerardo Guillén Nieto then visited the Research Center for Optical Instruments and Systems Engineering, a ministerial-level research agency at USST. He showed great interest in the medical optical instruments at the center, such as the high-speed microfluidic PCR instrument and the full-range protein immunological intelligent detector.
Currently Prof. Gerardo Guillén Nieto is engaged in vaccine research in the fields of hepatitis, dengue, meningitis, pertussis, cancer and combined vaccine. His drug research involves cell protection, neuro-protection, cardio-protection, infectious diseases, cancer and auto-immunity. He has published more than 170 research papers and obtained 45 patents on vaccines, biotechnology, infectious diseases and drug research. In addition, he has received scientific research awards from the Cuban Academy of Sciences 48 times and won the Biology Award from the Third World Academy of Sciences, the “Finley Medal” from the Cuban Council of State, as well as the WIPO Patent Award.
