Joint Research Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Vehicle Engineering of USST and Coventry University Unveiled

November 6, 2019

On the morning of October 17, the signing and unveiling ceremony of Joint Research Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Vehicle Engineering of USST - CU (Coventry University)was held in Conference Room 1 of Graphic Information Center. Professor Liu Ping, the vice president of USST,and Professor Richard Dashwood, the vice president of CU,attended the ceremony. On behalf of CU, six professors including the head of UC’S Institute for Future Transportation and Cities and the head of Engineering Environment and Computer Department attended the ceremony. Heads of related colleges and departments, heads of vehicle engineering of the College of Mechanical Engineering and some teachers and students in our school attended the ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Li Haolin, the dean of the College of Mechanical Engineering.

Liu Ping delivered a welcome speech, in which he highly praised the exchange and collaboration between the two sides, pointing out that the joint research centre will further promote our high-level university construction. Richard Dashwood expressed his expectation of future collaboration between the two schools and introduced the whole situation of CU. Then, Liu Ping and Richard Dashwood, on behalf of the two schools respectively, signed the agreement to co-build the Joint Research Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Vehicle Engineering of UC and unveiled the research centre.

Later, Dean Li Haolin introduced the joint doctoral program to teachers and students present at the ceremony. Professor Carl Perrin, the director of the Institute for Future Transportation and Cities at CU, introduced CU’s advantages and challenges in advanced manufacturing and vehicle engineering.
The collaboration between our school and CU started in 2013, and the two sides carry out the collaboration in exchanges between teachers and students every year. On December 7, 2017, during the 5th meeting for China-UK high-level cultural exchange mechanism and the 10th China-UK educational ministerial consultation, the two sides, witnessed by Minister of Education of China and the UK, signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a joint research center for advanced manufacturing and then started the program. In 2018, President Ding Xiaodong of USST visited CU and signed a joint doctoral training agreement with its President. The two exchange visits between the two sides in 2019 further promote the establishment of the joint research centre for advanced manufacturing and vehicle engineering. And the collaborative content and operation mechanism of the joint research centre is finally determined through many exchanges between the two sides.

Based on the discipline advantages and research directions of the two schools in advanced manufacturing technology, the joint research centre decides to carry out the collaboration in new energy vehicles and big data. With clear objectives and distinctive features, the research is not only a powerful combination but also a complement to each other, which has strong practical feasibility and unique innovation. The joint research centre is significant for our school to establish international first-class research teams, build an international first-class research platform and promote the construction of international first-class disciplines. It will certainly play a significant role in promoting high-level talents cultivation and “Double First-Class” construction of our school.
