Welcome to the first issue of 2021 A Month of USST.
In this issue, USST held the 7th plenary session of the 8th CPC Committee of USST, mapping the outline of 14th Five-Plan of USST to follow a high-quality development path. School leaders visited alumni, New Fourth Army soldiers, extending care to their health and talking to them about the present and future of USST. USST strengthened ties with Chongming district, deepens talks with Feihong Group, better serving and integrating into Shanghai’s urban construction.
In this issue, the Future Optical Laboratory made a number of major research achievements. The team led by Academician Gu Min published optical-related achievements in journal Science Advances and Light: Science and Applications, making new findings and solutions in optical data storage and all-optical holographic nanostructure technologies. The project team led by Prof. Zhang Dawei demonstrated a three-dimensional-culture multi-organ microfluidic (3D-CMOM) chip in ACS Sensors. The project team led by Prof. Song Bo collaborated with several universities and institutes to put forward a new mechanism and strategy of neurosignal and cerebral function modulation. The team led by Academician Zhuang Songlin and Prof. Han Sen won the first award of China industry-university-research collaboration innovative achievements thanks to their projects entitled “Ultra-high Precision Plate Absolute Detection Technology against Disturbance”.
In the meanwhile, USST introduces two new engineering majors: energy storage science and engineering & intelligent medical engineering; the "Key Laboratory for Reliable Digital Copyright Ecology and Standards" was declared and approved by the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA); electrical functional materials team from School of Materials Science won the second prize of science and technology award; students from School of Environment and Architecture won the second prize of 12th CAR-ASHRAE Students Design Competition. On the new journey, the school has smoothly made a first start.
Prof. Zhang Shuping worked at College of Science. She was devoted to the research of sargassum, developed sargassum products that can speak Shanghai dialects, produce excellent cotton in Xinjiang salt marshes. In recent days, she has led team members to win the only one Women’s innovation studio in Shanghai Education System.
☆On New Journey of High-quality Development in the Next Five Years
To better grasp new situation, focus on new starting point, seize new opportunities, and embark on new journey of school’s high-quality development, the 7th plenary session of the 8th CPC Committee of USST was held.
The session heard and deliberated the 2020 School Work Report and Highlights of 2021 Party and School Work given by Wu Jianyong, secretary of Party Committee of USST, entrusted by standing committee of CPC, USST, and deliberated and passed the guideline of 14th Five-Year Plan of USST (2021-2025).
The session reached consensus, caused inspiration, consolidated efforts, pointing out the way for the development of USST and establishing solid foundation for the next five years of USST.
☆School Deepens Interview, Communication and Collaboration
On February 1st, party members and related heads of USST went to Changxing island of Chongming district for an investigation and carried talks with leaders and heads of some departments from Chongming district. Circling around the major needs of marine engineering equipment, they are expected to strengthen the ties and realize the long-term cooperation and mutual developmen. On March 22nd, Xu Kuangdi, an outstanding alumnus of USST, Vice-chairman of the national committee of the 10th CPPCC, and former President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wu Jianyong, Secretary of Party Committee of USST, Ding Xiaodong, President of USST met in Shanghai. On March 26th, school leaders went to Shanghai Huahong Group for an investigation and talk. Focused on revolutionary frontier technologies, both sides will , enhance the dock in innovative integration of, talents cultivation, conquer the pillar and construct a new system in new emerging strategic industries such as integrated circuit, artificial intelligence undertaken by Shanghai.
☆USST Holds the commencement of Reconstruction and Extension Project of No.516 Jungong Road Campus
On the morning of Jan 12th, the commencement of reconstruction and extension project of No.516 Jungong Rd. Campus was held.
With continuous care and the strong support of leaders at all levels, the reconstruction and extension project of No. 516 Jungong Rd. campus has become a major preparatory project, and has unveiled a new chapter of comprehensively improving campus construction in 2021, and become an important part of building the school into a university of science and technology with distinctive features. Seizing this major construction as an opportunity, the school practices the mission of cultivating talents for the Party and the State, makes scientific and systematic plans, taking coordinated measures to advance a new round of local high-level construction, and contributed to the wisdom and strength of “four services” of education, upgrading Shanghai urban function and “five centers” construction.
☆Future Optical Laboratory Releases many Researches Achievements
The artificial nano-photonic team led by academician Gu Min artificial nano-photonic center published a high-level paper entitled “Nanoscale optical writing through upconversion resonance energy transfer”in Science: Science Advances, offering a cheaper and sustainable solution for the next generation of high-capacity optical data storage while enabling the energy-efficient nanofabrication of flexible graphene based electronics ; the team also published a high-level paper entitled “Nanoprinted high-neuron-density optical linear perceptrons performing near-infrared inference on a CMOS chip” in Light: Science and Applications, making new findings in all-optical holographic nanostructure. On March 1st, a paper entitled “Nonthermal and reversible control of neuronal signaling and behavior by midinfrared stimulation” was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United State of America by Song Bo’s project team and other partnerships，first finding and putting forward a new mechanism and strategy of neurosignal and cerebral function modulation , getting strong reviews in academic community. The project team led by professor Zhang Dawei from the future optical laboratory invented a three-dimensional-culture multiorgan microfluidic (3D-CMOM) chip to precisely control DO concentration in the different 3D cell culture chambers, and the related paper entitled ““An oxygen concentration-controllable multi-organ microfluidic platform for studying hypoxia-induced lung cancer-liver metastasis and screening drug” was published in ACS Sensors.
☆Two Shanghai Municipal Engineering Technology Research Centers Approved
"Shanghai High-Performance Medical Device Materials Engineering Technology Research Center" and "Shanghai Environmental Biosafety Instruments and Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center" were declared by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology. Shanghai High-Performance Medical Device Materials Engineering Technology Research Center focuses on the key technology research, product preparation and development of high-performance medical device materials such as medical stainless steel, medical magnesium alloy, and medical titanium alloy, and is committed to solving problems of the innovation and industrialization of high-Performance medical device materials. The Shanghai Environmental Biosafety Instrument and Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center combines the advantages of photoelectric technology and biological detection technology to build a monitoring-sampling-detection-protection-treatment technology, equipment and evaluation system for the prevention and control of environmental biological safety, R & D and promotion of new rapid detection equipment for viruses and pathogenic microorganisms, contributing to the prevention and control of major epidemics.
☆Patent Applications for Rehabilitation Engineering Technologies Rank First among Global Universities and Public Research Institutes
On 23rd March, the Global Press Conference with a theme “2021 WIPO Technical Trend: Assistive Technology” was held in Geneva, Switzerland, the headquarter of WIPO. Assisted byWHO, it is areport on important technical trends of rehabilitation engineeringtechnology, followed by the first 2019 WIPO Technical Trend: Artificial Intelligence.
According to the report, the total number of patent applications for rehabilitation technology at USST from 1998 to 2019 ranks first among universities and colleges, and public research institutes in the world’s TOP 12 institutions.
☆USST Approved to Set up Another NPPA Key Laboratory
The National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) has issued the "Notice on the List of Key Laboratories for Technology and Standards in Publishing Industry", and the "Key Laboratory for Reliable Digital Copyright Ecology and Standards" initiated by our university is on the list. The Key Laboratory for Reliable Digital Copyright Ecology and Standards will focus on standards research, applied research, platform data service research in reliable digital copyright block chain, bringing the innovative function and scientific support of printing industry into full play.
☆USST Introduces New Majors：Energy Storage Science and Engineering & Intelligent Medical Engineering
Recently, two undergraduate majors: energy storage science and engineering, intelligence medicine engineering were successfully approved and registered by the Ministry of Education. The major of Energy Storage Science and Engineering meets the demands of the transformation of national energy and the construction of “clean, low-carbon, safe and highly-efficient” energy system. Focused on the national major strategy “Health China 2030”, the major of intelligent Medicine Engineering is a highly interdisciplinary subject in medicine, science and engineering. The approval of two new engineering majors will contributes to optimizing major layout, deepening research and practice of emerging engineering education, improving the ability of high-level applied-oriented talents boosted by new technologies, new industries, new models, and new patterns.
☆USST Students Won the Second Prize in the 12th National CAR-ASHRAE Student Design Competition
Recently, the final of the 12th National CAR-ASHRAE Student Design Competition was successfully held. The team composed of four students from the School of Environment and Architecture won the second prize. Online broadcast was adopted for the final defense, which not only provided a direct and open communication platform for the participating teams and employees in HVAC-related industries across the country, but also helped to show the elegant performance of the students from Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering
