A Month (April) of USST Officially Released

Preface

In April, Spring breeze blow gently and everything comes to life, along with the hardworking atmosphere at USST campus.
In this issue, the majority of teachers and students received vaccines against covid-19 at USST campus. It can be finished within a short time, leading to the herd immunity at USST. The First Hujiang Public Diplomacy Forum and the Appointment Ceremony of the Expert Advisory Committee was held, bringing together renowned experts and scholars from public diplomacy field in China. USST and China Communication Technology Co., Ltd signed the cooperation agreement; Chief Expert of China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center paid a visit to USST and held talk with Wu Jianyong, Secretary of Party Committee of USST; the delegations led by Ge Shilun, Secretary of Party Committee of Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, and Wang Qingyuan, President of Chengdu University visited USST one after another.
In this issue, Future Optical Laboratory from School of Optical-electrical and Computer Engineering made important breakthrough in optical field. Professor Zhang Dawei worked with his team members to make progress in metasurface generating and self-accelerating optical beams, contributing to innovations and findings in laser manufacture, optical storage, and biomedicine and many other areas. Prof. Zang Xiaofei, and Prof. Zhu Yiming from Terahertz Technology Innovation Research Institute developed the metasurface for polarization-controlled terahertz super-focusing, extended focal depth and longitudinal high-tolerance imaging, the research achievement “spatiotemporal optical vortices with controllable transverse orbital angular momentum” made by professor Zhan Qiwen successfully enters among 2020 top 10 advances in China Optical Field. The team led by Professor Li Haolin from School of Mechanical Engineering spent two years producing a high-speed vertical five-axis machine center VMC40U with Qinchuan Machine Tool and Tool Group. WIPO report revealed that USST ranks No.1 between 1998 and 2019 in terms of the total number of patent applications for rehabilitation assistive technology or rehabilitation engineering technology among the top 12 universities. Major progress in highly efficient electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production was made by Dr. Hao Weiju from College of Science. Dr. Naeem Faraz from Sino-British College published a paper entitled “Effects of fractional order time derivative on the solitary wave dynamics of the generalized ZK–Burgers equation” in top journal Results in Physics as the first writer.
In this issue, USST teams won two special awards, three first awards and three second awards in the 10th Shanghai Undergraduate Engineering Training Integration Ability Competition. Under the guidance of Wang Dan, a teacher from Public Experimental Center, USST’s team composed of Jiang Jiayan, Zheng Shiqi and Gu Jiaming from “Science and Technology Innovation Workshop Modeling and Computing Team” became the Meritorious Winners in Modeling/Interdisciplinary Contest In Modeling. In addition, Liu Hui from College of Science won the second prize in the final of 11th Chinese Mathematics Competitions.
The ranking list of Most Cited Chinese Researchers 2020 was announced by Elsevier. Five researchers from USST entered the list, including Professor Dou Bin (Power Engineering and Engineering), Professor Li Qingdu (Biomedicine Engineering), Professor Qin Chuan (Information and Communication Engineering), Professor Wei Guoliang (Control Science and Engineering), and Professor Yu Dengguang (Mechanical Engineering). Their research achievements have made great contributions to the development of natural science field.

School Development
☆USSTers Got Covid Vaccination inside Campus
With joint efforts of Department of Logistics, Department of Security, Asset Management Department, Information Office, Sports Department, USST has implemented strict and comprehensive epidemic prevention measures from April 6th to 7th. Temporary vaccination area was set in sports culture center of Jungong Road Campus. The majority of teachers and students received vaccines against covid-19.
Now, under the support of Yangpu Health Commission and Changbai Xincun Street, the vaccination area has been moved into USST campus where more than 30 medics from the East Hospital of Shanghai Affiliated to USST provided services and guidance, in collaboration of USST medical staff, ensuring the smooth work for vaccination.

☆USST Held First Shanghai Public Diplomacy Forum and Appointment Ceremony of Advisory Consultation Committee
On April 21st, the First Hujiang Public Diplomacy Forum and the Appointing Ceremony of the Expert Advisory Committee was held at University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.
More than 60 delegates from academia, politics, enterprises and media held in-depth discussions. The first expert advisory committee of the Shanghai Institute of Public Diplomacy has made its debut, bringing together renowned experts and scholars from various fields in China.
The institute, jointly established by the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association and the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, serves as a theoretical research institution, a university think-tank and a talent training base. Scholars present argue that global pandemic has speeded up the evolution of international changes, and diversified and effective public diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role. Therefore, the convening of the first Hujiang Public Diplomacy Forum at this time is of great practical sense.

☆USST and CCT Group Signed a Cooperation Agreement
On the morning of April 21th, USST and China Communication Technology Co., Ltd signed the cooperation agreement. The signing of cooperation agreement provides them with a platform to establish a close relationship and widen their operation area. Both sides will share resources, complement advantages, underscore the R & D and the industrial development of terahertz products, enhance abilities of terahertz industrialization and product transfer, contributing to the promotion of terahertz technologies and the construction of a high-level university.

☆Future Optical Laboratory from OECE Made Important Breakthorugh
Directed by Academician Zhuang Songlin, Professor Zhang Dawei from Future Optical Laboratory worked with his team members to make progress in metasurface generating and self-accelerating optical beams, contributing to innovations and findings in laser manufacture, optical storage, and biomedicine and many other areas. The research achievements were respectively published in international authoritative journals ACS Nano (IF: 14.588) and Laser & Photonics Reviews ( IF: 10.655).. Prof. Zang Xiaofei, Prof. Zhu Yiming from Terahertz Technology Innovation Research Institute develop the metasurface for polarization-controlled terahertz super-focusing, extended focal depth and longitudinal high-tolerance imaging that applied to high-resolution terahertz imaging. A series of achievements include 7 high-level papers in SCI. At the awarding ceremony of 2020 Top 10 Progresses China Optical Field, the research achievement “spatiotemporal optical vortices with controllable transverse orbital angular momentum” made by professor Zhan Qiwen successfully enters among 2020 top 10 advances in China Optical Field.

☆Three Alumni of USST Become Valid Candidates for 2021 Academician, Chinese Academy of Engineering
On April 23rd, after the deliberation of the presidium of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 577 potential candidates for academician were finalized in 2021, and 3 graduates from the School of Energy and Power Engineering of USST were successfully selected, Chang Zhaohua, Ma Yushan and Yang Guoqi included.
Chang Zhaohua, acquired his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in the School of Energy and Power Engineering of Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Engineering (now referred to as University of Shanghai for Science and Technology) from 1979 to 1987. He is currently a professor at the School of Medical Instrument and Food Engineering, USST, and the Chairman of Shanghai MicroPort Group. He is also the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of USST Alumni Association. Ma Yushan, graduated from USST with a master's degree in power engineering in 2005. As the standing Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Wuzhong Instrument Co., Ltd., he had ever successively won a number of science and technology awards at a national, provincial and ministerial level. Yang Qiguo，graduated from Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Engineering with a major in turbines in 1984. And he is currently the Dean of the School of Energy and Power Engineering of USST. He had also won science and technology awards at a national, provincial and ministerial many times.
☆USST Upgrades Domestic Machine Tool with QCMT & T
On April 14th, the strategic cooperation agreement was signed between USST and Qinchuan Machine Tool and Tool Group (QCMT &T) at 2021 China International Machine Tool Show (CIMTS). Over the past years, USST has established a close relationship with QCMT & T, and the cooperation has produced an array of edge-cutting technological. During 2021 QCMT & T, a high-speed vertical five-axis machine center VMC40U, jointly developed by both sides, was demonstrated. The high-speed vertical five-axis machine center VMC40U was the first high-end Numerically Controlled Machine Tool, ever developed in China, whose accelerated velocity reached 2G, location precision reached 4 micrometers, repetitive location precision reached 2 micrometers. Among the world best in precision and speed, the high-speed vertical five-axis machine center VMC40U was widely applied to such areas as manufacturing vehicle, precision machinery, aeronautical and space technologies, medical engineering, model making, instrumentation engineering, etc.

☆USST’s Number of Patent Applications for Rehabilitation Assistive Technology Ranks First in the World’s Universities and Public Research Institutions
On March 23rd, 2021, the Report of the Global Conference on WIPO Technology Trends 2021: Assistive Technology was held at WIPO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The report reveals that USST ranks No.1 between 1998 and 2019 in terms of the total number of patent applications for rehabilitation assistive technology or rehabilitation engineering technology among the top 12 universities and public research institutions in the world, and it is also the only institution of higher education in the world to have entered the top 12.

☆Dr. Hao Weiju made Progress in Electrocatalytic Water Splitting for Hydrogen Production
Major progress in highly efficient electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production made by Dr. Hao Weiju, College of Science of USST. Dr. Hao realized efficient electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production by constructing flexible electrodes, and published related achievements in internationally known journal such as Energy & Environmental Science（IF:30.250）and Applied Catalysis B: Environmental (IF:16.683).

☆USST Undergraduates Accomplished Great Results in SUETIAC
From March 26th to March 28th, the 10th Shanghai Undergraduate Engineering Training Integration Ability Competition (SUETIAC for short) as well as the 7th National Undergraduate Engineering Training Integration Ability Qualification Competition, sponsored by Shanghai Municipal Commission, was held at Tongji University. Under the guidance of instructors like Rao Qiming, Zhang Jingyang, and Yao Zhongjin, 8 teams from USST took part in the four competitions of potential energy-driven vehicles, thermal energy driven vehicles, intelligent robotics and intelligent UAVs. After the fierce competitions, USST teams won two special awards, three first awards and three second awards.

☆USST Students Won Meritorious Prize in MCM
The results of the 2021 Mathematical Contest in Modeling/Interdisciplinary Contest were announced a few days ago. Under the guidance of Wang Dan, a teacher from Public Experimental Center, USST’s team composed of Jiang Jiayan, Zheng Shiqi and Gu Jiaming from “Science and Technology Innovation Workshop Modeling and Computing Team” became the Meritorious Winner.

☆The New Dinning Hall Made its Debut
The dinning hall of South Division of Jungong Rd Campus, USST, made its debut. There sprung up a modern multilayer and multifunctional dinning hall, with an area of 9000 square meters, after three years’ construction, providing various catering choices for all faculty and students, making itself a new ID card of USST.

☆USST Most Cited Researchers 2020
On April 22th, the ranking list of Most Cited Chinese Researchers 2020 was announced by Elsevier. Five researchers from USST entered the list, including Professor Dou Bin (Power Engineering and Engineering), Professor Li Qingdu (Biomedicine Engineering), Professor Qin Chuan (Information and Communication Engineering), Professor Wei Guoliang (Control Science and Engineering), and Professor Yu Dengguang (Mechanical Engineering). Their research achievements have made great contributions to the development of natural science field.
The global authoritative citation and index database Scopus was used as the statistical source to analyze the research achievements of Chinese scholars. With reference to the total citation number of papers published by researchers as the first author or correspondent author, who reach a top level among all researchers in China, the ranking list was made. The entrance into the ranking list of Most Cited Chinese Researchers means they enjoy high reputation in respective research fields, with their research achievements greatly spurring the development of the areas.
