Preface

In May, summer is approaching as spring has passed. All the USSTers, ambitious and high-spirited, have gained fruitful results in this month.
Here is the Voice of USST in May!
In the 2020 Shanghai Science and Technology Awards, totally 9 achievements were granted the prizes, and both the level and number of awards hit the better than ever. The Discipline of Computer Science has entered among top 1% in ESI (Essential Science Indicators) for the first time, making it the fourth discipline of USST to do so. USST established Key Laboratory of Publishing Industry Technology and Standards under the National Press and Publication Administration to further enhance the high-quality development of the major on press and publication. USST was approved to build the National Food industry (Urban Grain and Oil Security) Technology Innovation Center, which plays a positive role in the construction of Food Discipline and the promotion of the social impacts brought by USST. The Nobel Laureate, Professor Stefan Hell, started MINFLUX Device at Photonic Chip Institute, advancing the building of a world-class optical laboratory.
Teachers of USST have successively made high-level scientific research achievements.
Under the guidance of Academician Zhuang Songlin, the Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics Research Team led by Professor Liu Yi from School of Optical-Electrical and Computer Engineering has made another important progress in the research of air lasers. The team led by Professor Dou Binlin from the School of Energy and Power Engineering used chemical looping water splitting (CLWS) coupled with glycerol decomposition to simultaneously produce hydrogen and syngas was proposed using the iron-cerium-nickel (Fe-Ce-Ni) based oxygen carriers (OCs). The research team from School of Mechanical Engineering has published a series of high-level papers on the echelon utilization and recycling of the retired LIBs, which can maximize the life-cycle value of LIBs and achieve its environmental, economic and social values. Sun Chanjuan, a teacher from the School of Environment and Architecture, provided crucial theoretical basis and reference for fresh air control in confined space, and relative anti-virus achievement was selected as the top 1% highly cited paper and hot paper in ESI. Dr.Wang E’nuo from the College of Foreign Languages made comments on the headline of the European Times, aiming to put forward ideas about China-Austria relations.
Students of USST successively won awards in various high-level academic competitions.
USST’s Original Musical Drama Spring Coming Back won the first prize in the 6th National University Student Art Exhibition: USST won another “Winners’ Cup” at the 17th "Challenge Cup" of Shanghai College Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition. In the final of 2021 National University Business Elite Challenge International Trade Competition, ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest: Asian Regional Competition, and the second China Animation &Comic Art Design, USSTers all achieved good results.

Major Events

☆Computer Science Enters among Top 1% in ESI
In May of 2021, the latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) shows that for the first time the discipline of computer science enters among top 1% in ESI, becoming the fourth discipline after the discipline of engineering science, materials science, chemical science to do so from USST.

Key Laboratory for Technologies and Standards under NPPA Established
On May 27th, the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) held the opening ceremony of the Key Laboratories for Technology and Standards in Publishing Industry of the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA), or the Key Laboratory of Reliable Digital Copyright Ecology and Standards. The ceremony was presided by Professor Cai Jinda, Dean of the College of Communication and Art Design (CCAD). In February of this year, the “Key Laboratory for Reliable Digital Copyright Ecology and Standards” initiated by our university is on the list of NPPA, representing a major breakthrough in building key laboratories in the liberal arts and an important platform for industry-study-research cooperation and brainpower at USST.

Academic Achievements
Nobel Laureate Prof. Stefan Hell Starts MINFLUX Device at Photonic Chip Institute
On the afternoon of May 20, the Photonic Chip Institute held a starting ceremony of MINFLUX device in its “Photonics Engagement Sala” of the Photoelectric Building. The equipment was started by Prof. Stefan Hell, inventor of MINFLUX super resolution microscopic imaging technology as well as the 2014 Nobel Prize laureate. The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Zhang Qiming, executive vice director of the institute.

Professor Dou Binlin Made Progress in CLWS for Hydrogen Production
Recently, the research team led by Prof. Dou Binlin successfully made porous Fe oxygen carrier throughsol-gel, by enhancing the interplay between carriers and loaded Fe-Ce-Ni metal particles to improve its activity and stability, and having achieved chemical looping 750℃ direct water splitting for hydrogen production, and simultaneously decomposed bio-glycerol to produce syngas.

Professor Liu Yi Published Advanced Research Achievements in Air Lasing
Recently, under the guidance of Professor Zhuang Songlin an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics Research Team led by Professor Liu Yi from School of Optical-Electrical and Computer Engineering of USST has made significant strides in the air laser research that remains a leading and major research topic in these years. Using the air as laser gain medium, the air laser can produce a virtual laser in the remote atmosphere, which is expected to provide a new source of light for remote optical direction. Such new light source may possibly cause huge improvement to the air pollution monitoring, long-range electromagnetic radiation measurement, precise survey and so on.

Research Paper by Dr. Li Daixi Recommended by Faculty Opinions
The paper titled “Human Intestinal Defensin 5 Inhibits SARS-CoV-2 Invasion by Cloaking ACE2” by Dr. Li Daixi and published in internationally top journal Gastroenterolog was recommended by Faculty Opinions, a world’s academic organization, and was reviewed by Professor Jens-Michael Schröder, an immunology expert from Kiel University, Germany. It was noted that this practice provides a new way to prevent or treat covid-19. HD5 can be treated as a medicine, but also endogenous HD5 will be stimulated to achieve the goal.

Anti-virus Research Achievement by Dr. Sun Chanjuan Entered among Top 1% Highly-cited and Hot Papers
Under the guidance of Professor John Zhai, Sun Chanjuan from School of Environment and Engineeringpublished a paper titled “The Efficacy of Social Distance and Ventilation Effectiveness in Preventing COVID-19 Transmission” in the journal Sustainable Cities and Society (SCS, IF:5.268), which is of great meaning in the field of City and Environment Design as the first author, Recently, the latest ESI retrieval data suggests that, the paper was listed in ESI 1% highly-cited papers and ESI papers. This research verified the effectiveness and accuracy when predicting the infection rate in a confined space. It applied the testified model to predict the infection rate in a typical confined space, and pointing out the minimum fresh air volume needed in a certain exposure time range.

Dr. Wang E’nuo Published the Paper in European Times
May 28th marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Austria. On May 21, Wang E’nuo, an associate professor of the Department of German in College of Foreign Languages, USST, published the article titled “Equal Dialogue and Friendly Exchanges between China and Australia over the Past 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations-Making Benefits for All” on the front page of Europe Times.
