Shining through the dense camphor trees, the first ray of sunshine of the New Year falls upon the time-honored red brick buildings. USST-ers use their fighting chords to fiddle with the flowing time to welcome in a brand-new year in the ups and downs of life symphony. Nice to meet you, 2022! Happy New Year to USST-ers!
Every present moment is a brilliant point in life. 2021 witnessed the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. This year, USST’s pulse beat strongly in the blood vessel of the red heritage, in the chalk dust of the three-foot podium, in the bright light late at night, in the working of the roaring machinery, in the real-time data and in the WeChat moments where you browse and give likes... 365 days of hard work have created a brilliant annual report, ushering in a good start for the “14th Five-Year Plan”: We have integrated the study and education of the Party’s history into our core work, bravely taken the responsibility of “Educate Students for the Party, Cultivate Talents for the Country” and fulfilled the oath of “We trust the Party and we will do our best for the country”. We have adhered to the principle of virtue cultivation as our fundamental priority, and implemented undergraduate and graduate education reforms. Teachers who are willing to contribute have emerged as “web celebrities.” Promising curve wreckers have become “hot search” keywords and students from USST won the championship in the National University Students Art Exhibition. We are pushing forward key technological breakthroughs, and the rush of high-tech research results is opening up an unprecedented era in top-tier publications. Our computer science has entered the world’s top 1% of ESI for the first time, and the number of projects approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China has set a new record in history. Besides, we have carried away two first awards in the Shanghai Technology Invention.
We have achieved a major historic breakthrough in the “Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award” and the USST Science Park is rated the National A-level University Science Park again. From high-end CNC machine tools to ultra-high-precision inspections, from deep-sea oil and gas extraction systems to heavy-duty gas turbines, from high-end medical equipment to intelligent robots, from bioinformatics research platforms to “dual-carbon” policy recommendations, we have always been “writing” our papers in the land of China and at the forefront of the country and Shanghai’s major industries while standing on the main battlefield of “the Four Orientations,” namely, orientation to the forefront of sci-tech in the world, orientation to the sound growth of economy, orientation to the strategy demands of the country, and orientation to the health and well-being of the people. We have always been recruiting talents in varied and various ways so that we have won over one more top scientist. Academician Akira Fujishima, “father of photo-catalysis”, has joined us full-time together with his team. From “building ready-made nests” to “offering a helping hand”, we have supported young talents to take the lead, making USST more brilliant because of its talents, and talents more outstanding because of USST.
Our “present moments” are full of thriving creations, and beautiful dreams are booming everywhere. It is the spirit of the USST cultivated and converged by people and events of USST that makes us vigorous and invincible.
That is our aspiration: our original mission always remains invariant and our rule of law remains unchanged. Under the guidance of “focus, focus, and refocus”, “do what we should and do not do what we should not do”, and “concentrate our resources and advantages to cultivate ‘special forces'", we should cherish in our hearts the ideal of "all for the happiness of the general public," the top thing of the state. During the journey of building a first-class science and engineering university with distinctive characteristics, we have taken actions after consideration and targeted precisely on the blueprint to imprint the concepts of openness, sharing, coordination, and intensiveness into the genes of running a school, pursuing a high-quality development path that belongs to USST.
That is the courage to brave the dangerous beaches and leave our footprints there when treading on the stones. We have moved forward amid the tide of comprehensive education reform and upgraded excellent engineering education to Version 2.0, which adds vivid annotations to the integration of science and education as well as industry and education. We have taken the personnel system reform, the two-level management reform and the new department system reform as a fulcrum to lever the potential and vitality of “people” and create infinite possibilities for career development. We have extended the time and space with a series of measures of construction, optimization, and efficiency improvement, allocating resources to vital things. Also, we have taken “rule of law” as the weapon to coordinate norms and standards, “rule of wisdom” as the source to empower management and services.
That is the harmony of both internal and external efforts in developing with a worldwide vision. We have opened the door wider and wider. We have obtained special projects, bases, centers, laboratories, and other provincial and ministerial platforms in the fields of food security, digital publishing, medical equipment, ultra-precision optics, brain-like photonic chips, and emergency management. Rooted in the needs of people, based on the government’s major strategies, we have drawn a vivid picture of the integration of science & technology, medicine & industry, and science & art, demonstrating multiple elements of government, industry, university, research, and application. Starting from the riverside of the Huangpu River, we have integrated collaborative innovation and collaborative education into the map of the integration of the Yangtze River Delta and the integration of large, small, and medium-sized areas, moving toward a larger world.
That is the unshakeable conviction that “if I can't bear the responsibility, who can?” Under the intertwining of the great changes and the spreading epidemic, we took the construction of high-level universities as an opportunity to build a safe and stable bottom line to support the government in deepening reform and opening up across the board. Besides, we bravely acted as the pioneers to develop a new way for USST to grow. We stopped at nothing to sum up our own experience, condense our own developing model, make our voice powerful, and put forward our suggestions. Our students who are self-conscious and full of confidence are the most beautiful representation of a civilized campus.
This is the present that enables us to fulfill our ambitions anywhere. This is an era that highlights time waits for no man everywhere. In 2022, we will have the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and the development of the “14th Five-Year Plan” will also enter a critical period full of rolling difficulties. We have many constraints in the big era advancing forward in its relentless way. For example, we are still stumbling in the deep-water zone of advancing reforms. However, the years of practice of USST have accumulated into a history full of brilliant stars, which has seen that without experiencing biting cold, no success would be secured and that our courageous strugglers are not afraid of gaining nothing. In the construction of high-level universities, thousands of sails are competing, and the spring tide is surging. Every diligent and intelligent USST-er is the strongest backbone to support a prosperous career. In the belief of “no pain, no gain”, we are more powerful than ever. We are closer to our dreams than ever before!
2022 arrives as scheduled. I hope that all the USST-ers, with full energy and great enthusiasm, can embrace every promising present to devote themselves in their thriving career for a bright and shining tomorrow!
