Recently, the evaluation results of the key laboratories in Shanghai in 2021 were announced by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology. The Shanghai Key Laboratory of Modern Optical System, led by Academician Zhuang Songlin of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, ranked first in the field of Information Sciecnes and was awarded “excellence”. This is the third consecutive outstanding performance of the laboratory after the first two rounds of evaluation after 2014 and 2017.
The Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission approved the construction of the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Modern Optical System in 2006. It is a major provincial and ministerial-level laboratory with the optics as the key that also interlinks with other fields like Computer Science, Microelectronics, Materials Science, Life Science, Precision Machinery and Manufacturing, and Information Science. A number of national and provincial scientific research platforms and talent training bases, including the National Basic Science Center, “111” Intellectual Introduction Base, provincial-level Collaborative Innovation Center, and Engineering Center of the Ministry of Education, have been established supported by the laboratory under the direction of Academician Zhuang Songlin. More than 80 members, including more than 10 national level talents and more than 20 provincial and ministerial level talents, work in the laboratory. The laboratory conducts research in Ultra-precision Optical Manufacturing (new method), Terahertz Science and Technology (new wave band), Nano-photonics (new mechanism), Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics (new mechanism), and Medical Optics (new application) from three levels of basic optics, optical imaging, and spectrum technology. In recent three years, it has undertaken 86 national scientific research projects, more than 80 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, and the contract funds totals over 170 million yuan. He has published more than 500 SCI papers, including more than 300 ranking top 5% in the optoelectronic field, 13 sub journals of Nature and Science. More than 240 invention patents have been authorized in total, of which 7 have been converted into shares through pricing, with a total of 49.69 million yuan. It has won nearly 10 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, including the first prize of Shanghai Technological Invention Award and the first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award.
The laboratory has consistently committed to docking with the global academic frontier, facing the major national strategic needs, carrying out major projects, and strengthening global collaboration. The talent team's structure should be further optimized, multidisciplinary integration should be encouraged, and big breakthroughs in important areas like subversion, leadership, and technological bottlenecks should be strengthened. With The construction of Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Center assisted, good preparations for the reserve force and beneficial supplement of national key laboratories should be made.
