On April 9th, 2024, the ASIIN(German Accreditation Agency for Study Programs in Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Mathematics) Accreditation Commission officially passed the accreditation to USST’s “Applied Chemistry”study program, and the validity period of the accreditation will be extended to September 30th, 2027. Therefore, USST’s “Applied Chemistry” has become the first science major in China to obtain the ASIIN Accreditation Commission’s certificate, which marks a new level for the major of Applied Chemistry in USST in terms of professional construction, educational reform, quality improvement, and international talent cultivation. The degree in this major has been recognized in such countries as the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. As a result, USST graduates in this major are qualified to work as engineers in these countries.
The ASIIN accreditation work for the major of Applied Chemistry in USST was officially launched in 2019, and has received care and support from the top leadership of USST, functional departments, and relevant schools and colleges. Under the guidance of the USST-ASIIN China Europe Higher Education Research Center of the university, and in accordance with the ASIIN accreditation standards, relevant leaders of the School of Materials and Chemistry and teachers from the Chemistry Department have worked together to optimize and improve the major’s training plan, curriculum design, teaching reform, laboratory construction, and faculty development, achieving the requirements of professional accreditation.
From November 30th to December 3rd, 2021, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the world, the major of Applied Chemistry of USST, which demonstrated the status quo of professional education development, professional characteristics of undergraduate teaching quality and international talent training in a multi-dimensional way, received an online review from the alleged accreditation agency. The certified experts have fully affirmed the educational philosophy, basic conditions, student training quality, teaching management system, core competitiveness, industry impact, and social contribution of the major of Applied Chemistry.
In April 2022, ASIIN conditionally certified the major of Applied Chemistry of USST, and certified experts provided valuable suggestions for the future development of the study program. After comprehensively sorting out the existing problems, proposing practical and effective improvement measures, strengthening the construction of professional characteristics, and deepening the high-quality development of international talent cultivation, the ASIIN’s Accreditation Commission officially awarded the seal to the major of Applied Chemistry in USST in April 2024 after a year and a half of further development and improvement. Through this professional accreditation, the major of Applied Chemistry has formed an innovative teaching model based on self-evaluation at the university level and the school level, with “continuous improvement and closed-loop feedback” as the main line. All teaching staff related to the major of Applied Chemistry will continue to pioneer in teaching reform, ensure the quality of undergraduate teaching, and focus on enhancing the core competitiveness, industry influence, and social contribution of the major.
