May 25, 2025

On 14 May, in Room 212 of Qinyi Building, the inauguration for Committee of the Laboratory and the Academic Committee meeting brought a cohort of attendees, such as Professor Xuan Yimin (new Committee Chairman, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS) of the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA), Wang Lingyu, Party Secretary of USST, Zhang Hua, Vice President of USST, other committee members as well as our faculty members. The ceremony was chaired by Xie Jinping, Party Secretary of the School of Energy and Power Engineering (SEPE), USST.

In his welcome speech, Vice President Zhang Hua stated that under the guidance of the Committee, our tight-knit researchers have long pursued its mission to “advance global scientific frontiers and serve national strategic needs”. We focus on cutting-edge technologies about multiphase flow and heat transfer, aiming to build a leading research platform in energy and power engineering at home and abroad. In recent years, the Laboratory has prioritized five key research fields, making great strides in fundamental research, technology commercialization, and talent cultivation. These efforts provide strong support for technological advancement and industrial upgrading in China's energy and power research sector. Leveraging the expertise of the new Committee, the Laboratory will enhance its innovation through strategic discipline planning, resource integration, and youth talent incubation to better serve national strategic demands. Following this, Professor Dai Bo, Vice Dean of the Research Institute, announced the members of the Academic Committee.
USST Party Secretary Wang Lingyu presented appointment letters to Academician Xuan and other recipients. In his address, he remarked that with the assistance of the Committee and the strong support of all experts, a substantial progress has been made. He also extended his congratulations and gratitude to them, expressing confidence that the new Committee will better run the research platform and foster disciplinary development. Additionally, He emphasized that the development of the  Laboratory requires us to leverage the Committee’s advisory role, deepen innovation-industrial chain integration, and enhance collaborative innovation to boost core competitiveness. Breakthroughs in team cooperation, talent development, technological innovation and research will establish the Laboratory as a first-class research platform of multiphase flow and heat transfer in power engineering. This advancement will upgrade the research in energy and power science and make USST a first-class polytechnic.
The new Committee’s meeting was chaired by Academician Xuan in the wake of the inauguration ceremony.
Su Mingxu, Vice Dean of SEPE and Deputy Director of the Laboratory, made a detailed report on the Laboratory’s timeline, talent pool, research achievements, open collaborations, operational management as well as challenges. During discussions, participants of the Committee praised the Laboratory for its progress and offered targeted suggestions. They also urged the Laboratory to seize opportunities brought by the development of Shanghai’s global sci-tech innovation hub, to strengthen fundamental and applied research, to expand service domains, and to enhance research capabilities to make more contributions to the national strategies and regional economic growth. Besides, open research projects were reviewed at the meeting.
In his concluding remarks, Academician Xuan, emphasized that the research should focus on a clear-cut disciplinary field and core areas like multiphase flow and heat transfer. The Laboratory should align with national priorities such as dual carbon goals, seize strategic opportunities, and encourage researchers to leverage specialized expertise for special fields. This differentiated approach will elevate research clout and service, particularly in achieving breakthroughs in targeted research area and technology commercialization, thus, advancing high-quality, sustainable development.
Prior to the meeting, Academician Xuan, together with Committee members, paid a visit to the laboratories in Building No. 2 of SEPE.
