Handcrafts of the South of the Yangtze River Put on Display

On the afternoon of January 10, the themed exhibition of “Studio of Folk Art Inheritance, Innovation and Conversionwas launched in the Hujiang Museum of Art of USST. The theme of the exhibition is Handcrafts of the South of the Yangtze River. It aims to further the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinpings speech on Development in Inheritance and Inheritance in Developmentof traditional culture, build the aesthetic value of contemporary cultural life in the South of the Yangtze River and explore the development and design inheritance of folk art in the South of the Yangtze River. The exhibition is sponsored by the Department of Industrial Design, College of Communication and Art Design. Present at the opening ceremony were leaders of the Publicity Department and the Personnel Department, as well as the leaders of the College of Communication and Art Design. The opening ceremony was presided over by Associate Professor Li Wenjia, member of the studio and of the Department of Industrial Design.

In her speech, Yang Ailing congratulated the opening of the exhibition, and introduced the general situation of the projects which combine culture and education in Shanghai and USST’s present research in this area. She said that the combination of culture and education focuses on the goal of introducing talent and training professionals. She hopes that the Studio of Folk Art Inheritance, Innovation and Conversion will make great contributions in these areas.

In his speech, Wu Jian’an, Secretary of the Party Committee of the the College of Communication and Art Design, talked about USSTs stress on industrial design and support for the project. He encouraged teachers to seize the opportunity to study the cultural brands and culture of the South of the Yangtze River, and to pass on Chinese wisdom, promote Chinese spirit and disseminate Chinese culture in innovative ways.

In his speech, Zheng Sheng, the Director of the studio, elaborated on the status quo of the inheritance of folk crafts, the far-reaching significance of the project and its implementation. He also expressed his heartfelt thanks to the leaders for their support and the hard work of teachers, and affirmed and appreciated the excellent performance of the students.            

After the opening ceremony, the teachers and students who attended the opening ceremony visited the Hujiang Art Museum, and put forward valuable suggestions for the subsequent transformation of the works exhibited and the future development of the studio.       

The exhibition focuses on more than 80 pieces of: rattan, bamboo, purple sand, and ceramic materials. During the creation process, several well-known non-hereditary inheritors were involved in the design reconstruction and transformation to seek the rebirth of traditional culture in the current context. During the project construction period, quite a few students stayed in the countryside for more than 20 days to keep track of the production of products, inheriting the “craftsman spiritwith innovative works.         

The Department of Industrial Design of USST will take this exhibition as an opportunity to enhance the cultural self-confidence and practical support, to explore the revival of the excellent cultural value and practical experience of the Chinese nation by means of design, and to contribute to the Traditional Handcraft Renaissance and Rural Revitalization by means of “poverty alleviation through industrial design.
