University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiaotong University jointly initiated the establishment of Medical Engineering Interdisciplinary Innovation Research Institute and Medical Engineering Interdisciplinary Graduate School, in order to solve the problems raised by doctors in clinical practice through the penetration and integration of different disciplines, such as medicine, engineering, science, and so on. In this process, we will vigorously cultivate graduate students who have compound knowledge and the ability to solve the practical problems of medical technology. The start-up meeting has been held at 9:00 am on September 26th in the VIP room on the second floor of the Grand Hall of USST.
Ding Xiaodong, President of USST, said that how to build a first-class science and technology university with outstanding characteristics is inseparable from multi-party cooperation and multi-disciplinary integration, especially in the process of building high-level colleges and universities. He compared the cooperation between the two sides to the marriage of men and women. He also pointed out that at present, most of the medical science and technology products rely on imports, and a very small operation costs a large sum of money. As pinhead like suture needles, there is also big scientific research potential. Small products are related to people’s livelihood and health, as well as large industries. The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology should focus on clinical practice, directly aim scientific and technological innovation at the actual needs of people’s health, through the integration and cooperation of Medicine, Engineering, Science and other disciplines, to cultivate interdisciplinary graduate students with the ability to solve medical and technological problems. The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology will hold forums, salons and other communication activities, build the medical engineering interdisciplinary platform into an Innovation Field of cooperation, opening and sharing, constantly innovate its organization form and mechanism, and strive to create a model of medical industry cross in colleges and universities across the country.

Chen Guoqiang, Dean of the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiaotong University, believes that based on the freedom, the cooperation of Engineering and Medicine is expected to get a result. He pointed out that the progress of medical technology partly can be attributed to the promotion of science and engineering. In the era of implementing the strategy of Healthy China and promoting the construction of Healthy Shanghai, deepening the medical engineering interdisciplinary cooperation is not only the responsibility and mission of School of Medicine but also a world where great achievements can be made. The cooperation with the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology has a solid foundation and should be put into action. He also pointed out the key to this cooperation, that is, through the joint efforts, we can first put forward scientific issues that truly meet the health needs of the people in medical practice, focus on the needs of major disease prevention and control, layout a number of key projects, and carry out high-level scientific research on specific problems and projects. The clinical application effect of affiliated hospitals should be highlighted, and strive to produce some original achievements with core technical value through solid work for several years. On the other hand, we can work hard to focus on cultivating talents with the compound ability of medicine and engineering, to lay a solid foundation for the construction of “Healthy China” and “Healthy Shanghai”.

Liu Ping, Vice President of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Wu Tao, Deputy Secretary of CPC and Vice President of School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiaotong University, signed the Cooperation Framework Agreement on the Joint Construction of Medical Engineering Interdisciplinary Innovation Research Institute on behalf of the two universities. Ding Xiaodong and Chen Guoqiang jointly inaugurate the Medical Engineering Interdisciplinary Innovation Research Institute and the Medical Engineering Interdisciplinary Graduate School.
According to Zhuang Songlin, academician of the School of Optical-Electrical and Computer Engineering of USST, the optical research team of USST has always been in close cooperation with the medical field, and has made a lot of achievements in the interdisciplinary field of Medicine and Engineering, and has applied them into clinical practice. It is hoped that the Science discipline can better serve the development of Medical Science, and also lead to its breakthrough and development. We are looking forward to seeing some achievements will be made to meet the needs of the country and the happiness of the people.
While carrying out the Medical Engineering Interdisciplinary Research Projects, the cooperation between the two universities also has a greater innovation exploration, that is, the joint establishment of “Medical Engineering Interdisciplinary Graduate School”. The two schools work together to cultivate comprehensive high-level talents for the industry with different academic backgrounds and university cultures. It is reported that at present, more than 200 graduate students from USST have entered into 40 projects, and 15 doctors who committed to Medical Engineering Interdisciplinary Study and 38 joint training instructors have been selected from the doctors participating in the project. Finally, a solution plan will be worked out under the common efforts of engineering teachers and medical teachers as well as the graduate students.
