USST Strengthens Ties with SHU

On August 4th, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) went to Shanghai University (SHU) for a survey about some issues like the “14th Five-Year Plan”, teaching reform and curriculum innovation for a high-level university construction. Present were main leaders of these two universities and some other heads of relative departments, who carried out the talks.

Liu Changsheng, President of SHU, extended a warm welcome to the delegation of USST. He pointed out that with a long running-school history, USST has cultivated an array of outstanding engineering talents whom are urgently needed for the development of our national manufacturing industry. Over the past two years, with the construction of a high-level university as a chance, USST has made active explorations in: talents cultivation, disciplinary construction, foreign collaboration and social services, and formed many innovative experiences and embarked on a road to Univeristy of Science and Technology having distinctive features, which offers indicative values for the construction of SHU.

Cheng Danhong, Secretary of the Party Committee of SHU, thought that USST and SHU both belong to key universities under the management of Shanghai Municipal Government, bearing the responsibility of cultivating talents in the new era, but meet many similar problems. The both schools should: build a consensus, create favorable conditions, make use of policies, and establish more platforms for cooperation and communication so that individual professional strength can be brought into full play. Higher education resources should be well allocated, scientific innovative sources should function and be consolidated to upgrade the capability of USST to serve social and economic development, making due contributions to Shanghai’s higher education development, and the construction of Shanghai as an international metropolis.

USST President Ding Xiaodong pointed out that SHU and USST have kept in close contact. This talk offered a great platform for communication between both schools. As the only research-oriented universities among universities under the management of the Shanghai Municipal Government, SHU has cultivated lots of talents for the country and for Shanghai, and contributed much to social and economic development. In recent years, SHU has achieved substantial results in talent cultivation, scientific research, internal governance, infrastructure, and international exchange. They hope that holding the talk is an opportunity. Both schools will strengthen the cooperation and communication to turn over a new chapter for serving major national and also Shanghai’s strategic needs to achieve connotative development for higher education.

Wu Jianyong, Secretary of the Party Committee of USST extended thanks. He pointed out that USST should serve developmental guidelines for higher education, implementing the thought of “Three Aspects of Education”. Also, USST should serve Shanghai’s social and economic development. At present, USST is mapping out the “14th Five-Year Plan”. It will engage in tackling difficulties in: artificial intelligence, integrated circuit, and biomedicine, and comprehensively upgrade capabilities in serving economic and social development. USST should serve the growth of students and their career development and also the teachers. USST will tap the potential，improve facilities, and strengthen human resource supplies, auxiliary systems, the cultural environment and the governance system and capabilities leading to a leapfrog development of a high-level university.
