A Month of USST for Summer Vacation Officially Released

Preface

USSTers are striving hard in the blistering summer.

Under regular pandemic prevention and control, all departments at USST never slacked in either mind or in prevention actions, and strove to build a “firewall” against the pandemic during the summer vacation.

Leaders have been everywhere to carry out intensive research and promote the high-level development of USST by visiting universities, deepening cooperation and meeting alumni. USST teachers have made full use of their summer to enhance teaching quality and immerse themselves in experiments. They endeavor for better teaching methods and further scientific research, making due contributions to the development of USST. Young students are living their expectations to the fullest. They brighten their youth and make efforts to reach what they strive for through actively participating in social activities and increase enthusiasm in experimental learning.

During the summer vacation, USST achieved a lot. Two cooperation framework agreements were signed with AUST(Amhui University of Science and Technology)and Karamay Cloud Computing Industrial Park, respectively. Papers were written by USST teams like Future Optical Laboratory led by Academician Zhuang Songlin, Medical Imaging Technology Team led by Professor Nie Shengdong, young teachers like Hu Haisheng. Led by Academician Zhuang Songlin, the Ultra-precision Optical Team from Future Optical Laboratory made progress in the multiplex amplification of target genes of periodontal pathogens of continuous flow PCR microfluidic chip. USST students reached a new peak in the 7th China International College Students ‘Internet+’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. USST was honored with 75 national natural science foundation projects and 2 national Excellent Young Scientists Funds. The new semester is approaching, making USST campus brimming with laughter, energy and vitality. Every teacher and student is heading for a brighter future, with full confidence and ambitiousness.

Awards

On June 28th, the final of 7th China International College Students ‘Internet+’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in Shanghai was held. 22 innovation and entrepreneurship programs from USST successfully reached Shanghai final, and finally totally 8 programs entered the finals and all won the golden awards.

Breakthrough

On August 18th, National Natural Science Foundation Commission announced the review result of 2021National Nature Science Funds. USST was granted 75 funds, hitting a new record, an increase by 23%. The general projects totals 31, the youth projects total 42. USST also won two national excellent young scientists funds, namely, Dr. Gu Fuxing’s “Micro Fiber Optical Instrument” and Zhaojing’s “Traffic Flow Analysis”.

Check & Acceptance

On July 27th, chaired by academician Zhuang Songlin, USST, academician Tan Jiubin, and academician Li Baotong, “Automatic Detection System for Coronavirus and Virulent Pathogenic Viruses” has been checked, having reached a successful conclusion and acceptance.

Debate

On July 22th, the symposium on quality certification of high-level Sino-foreign of China Education Association for International Exchange was held online. Sino-British College of USST was invited and hoped to escalate the running-school level and impacts of USST through a debate on high-level Sino-foreign cooperation education.

Exchange

On August 8th, some school leaders went to Baoshan District for investigation, visited “Golden Coil Base” China Baowu Steel Group, Shanghai Baoshan Plan Exhibition Hall, carried out on-the-spot investigation of industrial transformation and upgrading, listened to reports about the plan of Boshan District.

Flipped classroom

In classes Materials Engineering, Dr. Li Ying from School of Materials and Chemistry adopted the flipped classes to establish an innovative teaching pattern. She led students to learn professional knowledge, and prepare classes themselves and some of them told something interesting.

Graduate education

From July 15 to 16, USST held a summing-up meeting or a free discussion on the educational ideas of graduate education at USST and a 2021 working meeting of PhD supervisors, focusing on the theme of “deepening the implementation of the Spirit of the National Conference on Graduate Education to improve the overall quality of graduate education at USST. "

High-level

In recent days, a Ph. D student Hou Xuewen from School of Medical instrument and Food Engineering published a high-level paper titled “A Study of Correction Transfer Method of Low-field NMR Signal based on 1D-Unet” as the first author. Based on the theory of Direct Correction Algorithm, Professor Nie Shengdong's team proposed to update the correction matrix with iterative methods to reduce the correction error, and creatively designed a 1D u-net correction network for low-field NMR signal.

Innovation

Joint construction

On August 9th, the signing ceremony between School of Energy and Power Engineering and Xincang Municipal People’s Government. Guided by the principle “focus, cooperation, and open”, USST Advanced Power Equipment Technology Research Institute gave priority to the research in low-carbon energy and new technologies of power cycle system and established a frontier technological coordinative innovation platform.

Keen

This summer, to make the campus more beautiful and more modern, the department of infrastructure stood fast at the construction site under scorching sun. They are keen on promoting the rebuilding and enlarging of No. 516 Jungong Road Campus and tunnel construction of Haian Road.

Laboratory

Dr. Gao Xiumin from Future Optical Laboratory and Prof. Weng Xiaoyu from Shenzhen University, made breakthrough in light wave amplitude, phase position and polarization. Under the framework of classical optical theory, they established a relationship between light wave phase position and polarization, and invented spatial light modulator.

Model

Recently, the list of the second batch of “100 Graduate Party Member Models” was unveiled. After three rounds of selection, Ph. D student Li Yue from School of Optical-electrical and Computer Engineering was successfully awarded as a model for graduate party members.

New chapter

September 4th marks the registration day for incoming students of more than 4000 at USST. Those new USSTers registered, beginning an exciting new chapter of their life with USST.

Orbital Angular Momentum

Optical Chip Research Institute made new progress in the research of orbital angular momentum. Dr. Fang Xinyuan, Dr. Luan Haitao from USST worked together with the team led by Dr. Ren Haoran of Macquarie University, Professor Stefan Maier of University of Munich and Professor  Junsuk of Junsuk Rho of Pohang University of Science and Technology and made some new achievements. They used the two-photon polymerization femtosecond laser processing technology to realize the large-area complex amplitude orbital angular momentum multiplexing super surface holographic technology.

Pairing assistance

In order to actively respond to the Great Western Development Strategy, implement the spirit of the conference on pairing assistance program to Xinjiang, our school is actively engaged in Shanghai's aid work in Xinjiang, and deepen the all-round and multi-field cooperation between the school and Karamay& Kashgar.

Quest for excellence

In order to realize their dream of postgraduate study, USST students have supplied them with rich "spiritual food". For example, during the summer vacation, some of them chose to stay on campus, and seized his precious summer time to learn more useful knowledge and continued to work hard for the dream of postgraduate entrance examination.

Resist against typhoon

Upon the arrival of typhoon “fireworks”, all departments took rigorous measures to resist against typhoon, ensuring that every student safely use water and electricity in the library or lab. Various information measures were taken against flood and typhoon, to carry out fine management of work safety.

Summer camp

On July 4th, the 2021, 2021 summer camp kicked off at students center. A total of 72 teachers and students from Jiangsu University, Anhui University of Technology, Anhui Polytechnic University got together to welcome the opening of summer camp. It has been a wholesome try for undergraduate cultivation and innovation and entrepreneurship education.

Rebuilding campus

During the summer vacation, the school renovated old buildings such as the No.3 Teaching Building and the old gymnasium, and started design and construction projects for new teaching and public service buildings, so as to provide a better learning and service experience for teachers and students, and enhance comfort and satisfaction on campus.

Scientist

On August 30th, USST held the appointment ceremony for Professor Akira Fujishima, foreign academician of China Academy of Engineering (CAE). Professor Akira Fujishima, born on March 10, 1942, he is a Japanese chemist and president of Tokyo University of Science. He is known for significant contributions to the discovery and research of photocatalytic and superhydrophilic properties of titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is also known as the Honda-Fujishima effect. In 2021, he joined USST as a full-timer.

Team

New Energy Materials Team published many high-level papers in the research of solid-state batteries. Solid Polymer Electrolyte is soft, light and easy to handle, enjoys large-scale application future. To cope with some problems such as low ionic conductivity at a room temperature and poor inhibition of lithium dendrite, the New Energy Materials Team of the school carried out.

Uniform

From September 5th on, the school carried out military training for 2021 new comers. Wearing uniform, they rose in the morning and came back in the twilight every day, joining in the first university class with courage and confidence.

Visit

On July 7th, the delegation led by Zhang Qingliang, President of Anhui Normal University paid a visit to our school. Wu Jianyong, Secretary of Party of USST, President Ding Xiaodong, Vice President Sheng Chun and Liuping met the guests and carried out with them.

West Plan

After being selected into 2021 China’s Far West Program, Yin Zhuoxu from School of Optical-electrical and Computer Engineering, went to Tibet and worked at Bureau of Veterans Affairs there. The West Plan carried him onto a road full of pleasant surprises where he can contribute to the national construction.

New Journey, new beginning, there is an infinite X for school’s future development.

Youth

From August 1st to 2rd, entrepreneurship students from Yangtze River Delta University Alliance took part in two-day College Students Entrepreneurship Training Camp. The camp provides students with youth platform where they can integrate personal dream into national dream.

Zeal

In a new semester of new faces, USSTers will score more fruits with great zeal.
