The traditional Chinese calendar divides a year into 24 solar terms. Dong Zhi, also called the winter solstice, occurs when either of Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. Dong Zhi is the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year.
Dongzhi is also considered to be important from the traditionally cultural perspective, which marks a high time for family gathering and eating traditional Chinese food such as jiaozi (dumplings) and tangyuan (glutinous rice balls).
The winter vacation is approaching. USSTers are busy with final papers and the preparation for final exams. Wish each USSter a great success.
