On May 23th, Chinese Journal of Lasers announced the Top 10 China Optical advances 2021. the team led by Academician Gu Min from Institute of Optical Chips made major achievements in the field of optical multiplexing for high capacity. Research achievements “Six Dimensional Optical Multiplexing”was published in nature Photonics, and ranked as one of top 10 optical advances in China (Applied Research). Academician Gu Min and LI Xiangping from Jinan University were the corresponding authors. Ouyang Xu,Jinan University, and Prof. Xu Yi, Guangdong University of Technology, were both the first authors.
The results unambiguously demonstrate that the multiplexing of OAM beams at the nanoscale in conjunction with the wavelength, polarization and three spatial dimensions can be realized, which might not only facilitate the study of fundamental science mediated by light’s OAM but also underpin tremendous OAM-based applications for high-dimensional quantum entanglement, topological photonics, high capacity information storage, secure encryption and beyond.
The idea of using OAM for optical multiplexing in optical data storage was proposed in 2010 (Gu and Li, The road to multi-dimensional bit-by-bit optical data storage, Optics and Photonics News, July, 2010). This magnificent idea has been experimentally implemented though it took Academician Gu Min more than 10 years to achieve the idea.
Academician Joined USST as a full-timer,attracting a lot of attention from the optical industry, and ranked as one of top 10 most socially influential events in China Optical Industry (2019).
