2022 Public Diplomacy Forum on Science and Technology Cooperation Held at USST

How to become an important contributor to global science and technology governance? How to become a promoter of science and technology exchange and cooperation? On September 22, the " Collaborative Innovation for a Shared Future: 2022 Public Diplomacy Forum on Science and Technology Cooperation " was held at the USST auditorium, where academicians, experts and entrepreneurs from domestic and oversea science and technology fields gathered to discuss the theme of the forum " New Trends in Science and Technology Revolution and New Economic Development Tracks".
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Germany, Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom, the forum aimed to discuss the path of science and technology cooperation for economic development, highlighting the real value of science and technology public diplomacy. The forum was co-organized by Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association and USST, hosted by Shanghai Institute of Public Diplomacy and supported by the Foreign Friendship Committee of Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. The forum was divided into two halves, with Ms. Cai Yonglian, Vice President of USST, and Mr. He Jian, anchor of International Channel Shanghai, as moderators respectively.
Prof. Ding Xiaodong, President of USST, pointed out in his address that since the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association and USST jointly established the Shanghai Institute of Public Diplomacy in 2020, the two sides have actively explored new mechanisms for cooperation between the Institute and the university, through organizing the "Shanghai Public Diplomacy Forum", organizing a series of lectures and seminars, and publishing the "Public Diplomacy Translation Series". The Institute has done a lot of creative work in promoting theoretical research, scientific research innovation and talent cultivation in the field of public diplomacy. He said that USST will continue to give full play to its characteristic advantages of science and technology, adhere to innovation as the leading theme, deepen international science and technology exchanges and cooperation, and provide USST dynamics to promote economic and social recovery and development.

Mr. Ma Xingfa, Party Secretary of Shanghai Association for Science and Technology, addressed that responding to the challenges of the current serious epidemic and promoting the recovery and development of the world economy and society not only tests the ability of each country to cope with the challenges, but also tests the collective wisdom of global scientists, and it is a rare opportunity to weave the communication network of the science and technology community and give full play to the advantages of opening innovation of scientists. The Shanghai Association for Science and Technology will work together with the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association and USST to cooperate with scientists from all over the world and make positive contributions to make Shanghai an international science and technology innovation center and a socialist modern metropolis.

The participating academicians introduced the cutting-edge innovations produced by international scientific and technological cooperation from the fields of photocatalytic science and technology, optical artificial intelligence, superconductivity and electronic materials, and intelligent robotics, and talked about how to build an international cooperation platform for academic research, science and technology dissemination, and talent cultivation, so as to find scientific and effective solutions to the problems of resources, energy and environment faced by all mankind. They unanimously agreed that Shanghai is an international city with a strong spirit of scientific and technological innovation, rich scenarios for the transformation and application of scientific and technological achievements, and promising scientific and technological talents and enterprises, which is conducive to extensive domestic and international scientific cooperation in various fields. In such science and technology frontier, experts in various fields should not only "fight to the front" but also achieve "win-win cooperation", so as to let science and technology become the “confidence” of economic and social progress and development.
During the Panel Discussion session, scientists and entrepreneurs from well-known industries domestically and overseas exchanged opinions on plant science and technology, energy saving and emission reduction, public health, high-end manufacturing and other fields, focusing on the theme of science and technology public. They believed that strengthening international cooperation in science and technology is of great importance to enhance the level of science and technology of Chinese enterprises, and meet market demand and promote featured products.

Mr. Zhou Hanmin, a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the CPPCC, made a concluding speech, saying that he came to listen to the forum as a student and in the mood of a student, and paid tribute to the scientists who climbed to the top, to the entrepreneurs who worked hard, and to those who made contributions in the field of science and technology public diplomacy. He then elaborated on the relationship between science and technology innovation and public diplomacy from four aspects: First, science and technology innovation and public diplomacy share a common value goal, that is, they are both committed to promoting the formation of human solidarity values and ultimately building a community with a shared future of mankind. Second, the audiences of science and technology development and public diplomacy intersect, and they can use the language of science and the power of science and technology to enhance mutual trust among people of different cultures. Third, science and technology development and public diplomacy need the same bond, and the only way to promote cutting-edge technological innovation is to share each other's achievements. Finally, scientific and technological progress promotes public diplomacy, and public diplomacy in turn promotes the dissemination of science and technology. He said that we should explore cutting-edge technology, attract high-end talents, strengthen science and technology exchanges and shape international image, and help create a new pattern of science and technology cooperation.
