At the 12th Shanghai Art Show, the animation Liu Zhanen, designed by Zhou Qinming, a sophomore student majoring in arts design from College Of Art Design and Communication, USST, made its debut in China Art Museum, attracting a lot of visitors to stop for an observation. This is the 7th year that she has studied in USST, where she has designed series work of Liu Zhanen imprinted with USST, whose forms vary from illustration, comics to animation, because of his persistence and pursuit for the perfect.
Integrate history of school into arts creation
“Each USSTer certainly know about our first president Liu Zhanen. Several years ago, the knowledge of Liu gave me the inspiration, and urged me to tell a story about him in a new way,” said she, while talking about why she meant Liu Zhanen for the theme of the series. She added USST’s excellent historical architecture to the illustrations and comics, connected the human story with historical background, put emphasis on spatial and temporal elements, making story told in a more powerful way with her rigorous logic.
Inject warmth and depth into works
Based on a certain historical truth, how did the art technique can be adopted? So Zhou referred to large number of materials, inquired for the experts so as to collect information, study historical data and facts and stimulate art creativity. After deciding the topic, she covered a lot of materials in the Liu Zhan’en Collection, Liu Zhan’en Collected works from the library, and consult with teachers of history museum for some unknown details.
Different from the form of drawing on the blackboard, Zhou demonstrated the work by craftsmanship, so she chose Chinese paintings materials, and pink and pastel green as the palette, to reflect a soft and classical style in expression of the character, and the scene and visual effects.
“The hand-painted work appears more structured, and full of more warmth and feelings. From the historical perspective, the dignified feelings can also be spread.”
Her Work cannot be Better
How to find the precise and reliable historical materials, and make up powerful stories, and works of meaning and beauty, she pondered a lot and finished hand-drawings of different sizes, and spent more than 14 hours concentrating on the work. “I am the scriptwriter, director and post-producer of the animation.”
Series works of Liu Zhanen step by step went from classrooms to media, to professional art exhibition, supported by her pursuit for the perfect.
Continue with Ardent Love
Since young, she has fallen in love with painting. At the age of 17, she started to regularly practice drawing, and then successfully applied for the animation major at USST at 18. When she was 20, the series illustration of Liu Zhanen were received by the 10th Shanghai Art Show and storied in Hujiang gallery. When she was 24, the series animation of Liu Zhanen were received by the 12th Shanghai Art Show. In the process, Zhou repeatedly mentioned supports from her teachers. “In the printmaking studio of the comprehensive building, Luo Wei always “rhythmically” urging me to create, guiding me the direction of my work; Wang Zikai and Song Fangyuan patiently answers what I doubt; Li Baitian helps me solve technical problems encountered in anaphase. There are many other teachers who have provided valuable assistance for my creation”
All series works of Liu Zhan'en are a microcosm of Zhou 's life from undergraduate to postgraduate studies, with more creative skills and personal growth. She imagines being able to express herself boldly, think freely, and create more popular works. "If I want to become an original painter or graphic designer, pick up the paintbrush, have a passion, and there will be a nice view everywhere." When it comes to the future, Zhou is full of longings.
