Recently, the General Office of the Ministry of Education officially announced the list of the first batch of pilot projects for the construction of virtual teaching and research sections in China. Among the projects, two projects in the field of Biomedical Engineering from USST are on the list of virtual teaching and research section constructions, namely, the virtual teaching and research section construction of the biomechanics with members in biomechanics from USST, and a virtual teaching and research section construction of Biomedical Engineering with members in Medical Electronic Instruments from USST.
Building virtual teaching and research sections is an important exploration for the construction of new grass-roots teaching organizations in the information age. It takes building morality and cultivating people as the fundamental task, improving talent training as the core. It relies on modern information technology to build and strengthen grass-roots teaching organizations, guide the faculty to love teaching and do teaching research, and provide strong support for the high-quality development of higher education. The first batch of pilot construction recommendations was launched in July 2021. After the recommendations by colleges and universities, and the National Higher Education Administration Committee of the Ministry of Education and after comprehensive evaluations by experts, the first batch of 439 virtual teaching and research sections in China were selected, including 237 courses (Group) teaching, 137 disciplinary construction and 65 teaching and research reform programs. The two teams of biomedical engineering from USST were listed in disciplinary construction and course (Group) teaching.
During the construction process, the two teams of biomedical engineering will give full play to their advantages in focusing on innovating teaching and research formats, strengthening teaching research and making full use of the information platform of virtual teaching and Research. Thus, the two teams could probe into the new ideas in professional development and lay a solid foundation for improving the quality of talent training by strengthening the research in and exploration of curriculum implementation, and teaching methods and evaluation, etc.
The fact that the teams in the biomedical engineering were listed on the first batch of virtual teaching and research sections was the important achievements in the construction of national first-class undergraduate programs. The fact also symbolized that biomedical engineering discipline has been widely recognized in terms of talent cultivation, curriculum arrangements, teaching quality and so on. Through the construction of virtual teaching and Research Section, we would consolidate the teaching foundation in biomedical engineering discipline, expand international academic cooperation, make achievements in teaching research and practice, therefore, boosting the overall education quality.
