On July 7th, the cooperation framework agreement focusing on the integration of science and education, and collaborative education was signed between USST and Shanghai Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Guided by the principle of complementary advantages and win-win results, both sides will take full advantage of this national-level research institute practice platform. This will have benefits for research and teaching resources of institutions for higher education, and establish a collaborative platform, contributing to Shanghai’s role in the Scientific Innovation Centre for Science and Technology and have global influence.
The ceremony was presided over by Wu Jianyong, Secretary of the Party Committee of USST. USST President Ding Xiaodong, and Wang Jianyu, Dean of the Shanghai Branch of Chinese Academy of Science signed the Cooperation Framework Agreement. Liu Ping, Vice President of USST, signed the Postgraduates’ Joint Cultivation Agreement with representatives of Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
On behalf of the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang Jianyu extended sincere thanks to the great support of USST. He noted that the Chinese Academy of Sciences represents national scientific strategic power. Institutes in Shanghai attach importance to the kinship with universities affiliated to Shanghai, and expect to build a widespread strategic cooperation partnership with universities and colleges of science and technology, offering support and professional talent for the construction of the Shanghai Innovation Centre for Science and Technology. USST and Shanghai Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences share a similar discourse system which makes communication more convenient. This signing means the cooperation has marked a new beginning. Both sides will first jointly cultivate postgraduates, and then carry out more talks in more areas, and implement the construction plans for “peak” and ”plateau” disciplines, delivering outstanding talent to urban development and construction.

USST President Ding Xiaodong gave a warm welcome to the arrival of Wang Jianyu, and briefly introduced the history, discipline characteristics and high-level university construction. He noted that USST has enjoyed a profound historical foundation in engineering direction, and Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics and other disciplines will play a leading role in China in the long term. The school actively meets national and Shanghai strategic needs, and follows a “3151” construction path of a high-level university, and aims at frontier research areas such as medical-engineering and AI. He hopes that both sides will bring respective advantages into full play, focus on national major strategic demand and the world’s scientific frontier, and join hands to reach the agreement.

Wu Jianyong, Secretary of Party Committee of USST, pointed out that guided by the instructions of Li Qiang, Secretary of the Shanghai Party Committee, USST, paces are being stepped up to build the Future Optics Laboratory facing a frontier of scientific research and industrial application of future optical technology. USST has vigorously advanced interdisciplinary integration and worked together with Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine to establish the Medical-Engineering Interdisciplinary Innovation Research Institute and the Medical-Engineering Interdisciplinary Graduate School, and established the Innovation and Transfer Platform for Medical Devices and has upgraded capabilities for serving social and economic development. He noted that USST has established a long-term cooperation foundation with Shanghai Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences in postgraduates’ joint cultivation. This signing can better speed up the construction of the Shanghai Innovation Centre for Science and Technology, and promote the integration of science and education and collaborative education. He hopes that both sides, on the basis of former cooperation, can concentrate on national and Shanghai major strategic needs, push ahead original innovation and key technologies breakthrough, contributing to talent cultivation, scientific research and social development.

Before the ceremony, Wang Jianyu and his entourage paid a visit to the Machinery Intelligent Institute, Shanghai Research Centre for Rehabilitation Engineering and Technology, in a demonstration hall on the 1st floor of the OECD, Centre for Artificial-Intelligence Nano-photonics and Hujiang International Cultural Park.
The agreement says that both sides will focus on discipline development characteristics, make use of facilities and equipment, give full play to building up of talent, put emphasis on the scientific cooperation in photo-electricity, materials, medical engineering and instrument so as to promote integration of science and education and joint cultivation of postgraduates. It is understood that USST has carried out cooperation with Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences in photo-electricity, medical engineering, and instruments, recruited 96 masters’ supervisors and carried out joint cultivation of over 1000 postgraduates.
