On May 9th, the 2023 Sports Cultural Festival and Athletics Meet was held at the sports ground in the South Campus of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology(USST). Present at the event were numerous leaders from the university administrations, among whom were Wang Lingyu, the Secretary of the University Party Committee, Ding Xiaodong, President of USST, Sun Yuedong, the Deputy Secretary of the University Party Committee, Sheng Chun, the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of USST, and Cai Yonglian, Vice President of USST, as well as representatives from 16 schools and colleges. The ceremony was presided over by Vice President Zhang Hua.
The whole parade was led by flag guards, whose steps forward were firm and vigorous. Following the flag guard were the representatives from the schools and colleges who strode forward in an impressive manner, exuding a vibrant and energetic spirit, and showcasing the campus atmosphere of striving forward and promoting sports activities.
During his opening speech, President Ding pointed out that sports were an important contributor to the future of our country, our national rejuvenation, the effectiveness of moral education and talent cultivation, as well as the physical and mental health of our faculty, staff and students. Sports were one of the five pillars in education. The university administrations have always attached great importance to sports, vigorously implemented the “people-oriented sports” strategy, promoted the reform of sports education, boosted the construction of sports infrastructure. Thus, we have achieved good results in various sports competitions, which fully demonstrated the willpower and spirit of USST students to strive for the better. It is expected that the multi-functional stadium in the South Campus and the comprehensive fitness center in the North Campus would be unveiled in the second half of this year, and the sports facilities of the university would be even better. President Ding emphasized that in the process of building a civilized campus by the national standard, he hoped that all faculty members and students would take this sports meeting as an opportunity to embrace the sunshine and the sports, promote the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and let the flower of sports bloom in our efforts to building a national top university.
Amidst cheers and applause, a 400-person group gymnastics performance, organized and arranged by the Department of Physical Education, was on stage. This grand performance epitomized our achievements in sports education.
After the opening ceremony, with the first gunshot on the athletics field, the competition officially began. This sports meeting includes various events such as the 100-meter race, 200-meter race, 400-meter race, 800-meter race, 1500-meter race, standing long jump, 1-minute skipping rope, 1-minute kicking shuttlecock, pull-ups, 4×100-meter relay, 50-meter face-to-face relay, shot put, etc.
With the joint efforts of all faculty members and students, the 2023 Athletics Meet came to a close. The sports feast is about youth, passion, and striving, and also a showcase of our spirit and prospect. This event will inspire faculty members and students to maintain and carry forward the spirit of tenacity, perseverance, solidarity, and mutual assistance. With a renewed perspective and passion, we will continue to write a new chapter on the university’s reform and development.
