A Month (November) of USST Officially Released

☆Preface
Welcome to Voice of USST in November. Faced with the complex and repeated pandemic, USST take rigorous measures in the prevention and control to ensure that every teacher and student enjoys good health and full safety and USST plans like teaching, research and talent cultivation are successfully implemented. On November 3rd, Li Keqiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, visited Zhongyuan Science and Technology City in Zhengdong New District when inspecting in Henan province. In Origin Dynamics Intelligent Robot Co., Ltd, Li Qingdu, executive director of USST’s Research Institute of Machinery Intelligence and president of Origin Dynamics Research Institute of Intelligent Robot Innovation, reported to Li Keqiang the innovative technologies and a series of achievements developed by the team.
USST joined hands with 7 partners such as Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai Institute of Microsystems and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and United Imaging Co., Ltd to establish the Shanghai High-end Medical Equipment Innovation Center and initiated the Yangtze River Delta High-end Medical Equipment Innovation Alliance. It will focus on medical demands, targeting the high-end medical equipment technological frontier, addressing problems in pattern innovation and industrial similarity, promoting leapfrog industrial development, and offering compound talents for serving high-end medical equipment.
This month marked the 114th anniversary of USST. In order to prevent and control the spread of pandemic, only about 300 alumni came back to their alma mater for the celebration, while thousands of teachers, students and alumni gathered in the cloud platform, celebrating the birthday of USST around the world.
The Second Hujiang International Young Scholars Forum-Systems Science kicked off at the USST. USST will further implement the strategy of talents strengthening school, continue to promote the interdisciplinary development, boost the connotative development of the school and invite more outstanding young scholars to USST for building a high-level university.
Early this month, altogether 110 USSTers were sent to the CIIE serving as volunteers, among which 80 regular volunteers were all in the catering service position. Under the current situation of pandemic prevention and control, USST volunteers not only personally did a good job, but also upheld the spirit of unity and cooperation to make due contributions to the CIIE.
USST has increased investment in disciplinary construction, scientific research, talent training as well as communication and cooperation with remarkable results, which promoted the construction of a high-level university. There are also many high-level achievements made by USST scholars. The project initiated by Professor Ai Lianzhong from School of Medical Instrument and Food Engineering was selected to be funded by the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2020. Professor Wei Guoliang from the College of Science of USST was selected into the interdisciplinary field of “Highly Cited Researchers”, which marked his second year to be chosen since the first time in 2019. Professor Dou Binlin from the College of Energy and Power Engineering made a new progress in hydrogen production from biomass, leading his group to produce renewable hydrogen from chemical looping steam reforming of biodiesel byproduct glycerol by mesoporous oxygen carriers.
A paper entitled “Geotechnical influence on existing subway tunnel induced by multiline tunneling in Shanghai Soft Soil” written by Associate professor Zhang Zhiguo won the 2019 Sloan Outstanding Paper Award, the results of which have important theoretical guiding significance and practical reference for the risk control of urban subway tunnel construction and the revision of safety code for shield overlapping crossing construction.
In the final of the 6th China International College Students ‘Internet+’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship competition, the project “Brighten the Future —Development and Industrialization of Laser-driven White Emitter” won the golden prize in higher education main track. The project “Industrial Chain of Oil, Fruit, Vegetable Chips Promoted by Vacuum Frying and Deoiling Machine” won the silver prize in the “A Red Journey to Building Young Dreams” track.
Up to now, our school has won the golden prize in China international College students “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for 2 consecutive years, amounting to 2 golden prizes, 4 silver prizes, and 4 bronze prizes, scoring record higher and higher over the past four years. Meanwhile, USST students have made outstanding achievements in the National Final of the 11th “Blue Bridge Cup” Competition, winning 37 awards including 5 first prizes, 15 second prizes, 11 third prizes and 7 excellence awards. In addition, USST also won the title of “School of Winning” in the National Final of Software and Electronics.
The previous months introduced several outstanding scholars who boast fruitful achievements in scientific research, including Academician Gu Min from School of Optical-electrical and Computer Engineering, Professor Liu Ping from School of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor Yu Hongliu from School of Medical Instrument and Food Engineering, and Professor Gu Zhengtian from College of Science. This month, Professor Ai lianzhong and Prof. Wei Guoliang was introduced who were elected in honorary  lists for super researchers.

Research Achievements made by Li Qingdu’s team Received Attention from Premier Li Keqiang

According to reports from Xinhua News Agency and other China central media, after scrutinizing and learning about the research and development progress of sensors, reducers and other important links, Li Keqiang pointed out that the key to robotic research and development depends on algorithms, while the key to algorithms depends on mathematics. China has a huge market, so it is necessary to promote application and integration innovation. However, in order to achieve a real innovative breakthrough, the researchers must be patient for success and polish up their learning of mathematics with the grit and determination.
The principal team members listened to the prime minister’s instruction, and everyone felt very excited and encouraged. “As scientific and technological workers, we must do our best so long as our country needs us. While establishing the research foundation, we should overcome the difficulties in scientific and technological innovation. Only in this way can we have no regrets in our life and be worth the expectations of our motherland,” said Li Qingdu.

Shanghai High-end Medical Equipment Innovation Centre Unveiled at USST
After more than one year’s preparation, planning and construction, guided by the Shanghai Economic and Information Commission and supported by some other commissions, offices and administrations, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) joined hands with 7 partners such as Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai Institute of Microsystems and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and United Imaging Co., Ltd to establish the Shanghai High-end Medical Equipment Innovation Center and initiated the Yangtze River Delta High-end Medical Equipment Innovation Alliance.
Run by its legal entity Shanghai Liwei Medical Technology Co., Ltd, Shanghai High-end Medical Equipment depends on the Yangtze River Delta High-end Medical Equipment Innovation Alliance, “One Belt & One Road” Medical Device Innovation and Application Alliance. It will comprehensively manage procedures including: design, R&D, test, accreditation and quantitative production. It will focus on medical demands, targeting the high-end medical equipment technological frontier, addressing problems in pattern innovation and industrial similarity, promoting leapfrog industrial development, and offering compound talents for serving high-end medical equipment.
USST President Ding Xiaodong put forward that fast tracking of “reciprocal links among basic research, applied research and industrialization” should be implemented. we should continue to tackle difficulties in medical-engineering interdisciplinary areas, dock and serve the human health industry, speed up the key technological upgrading of high-end medical equipment, construct an innovation system focusing on integration of government, industry, higher education, research, hospitals and applications, contributing to an industrial ecology that fosters highly interconnected innovation, industrial and value chains.

The Second Hujiang International Young Scholars Forum- Systems Science Unveiled
On the morning of November 8, the second Shanghai International Young Scholars Forum kicked off at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.
President Ding Xiaodong, in his speech, briefly introduced the long history of USST and its running situation in recent years. Especially over the past 40 years, under the care of Qian Xuesen and other older generations of scientists, and with the joint efforts of faculty and scientific researchers, excellent results have been made in the Systems Science focused on its disciplinary the development and talent training, and a strong team with great influence at home and abroad has been established, which has become an important “Southern Base” in this research field in China. President Ding pointed out that USST will further align with Shanghai’s strategy of building a global influential science and innovation center, implement the strategy of talents strengthening school, continue to promote the interdisciplinary development, and accelerate the connotative development of the school. He sincerely invites outstanding young scholars to USST to pursue their dreams.
After the opening ceremony, Guo Lei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhu Daoli, Honorary President of the Sino-US Logistics Research Institute of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and David Rios Insua, Academician of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences delivered keynote speeches. The main forum was led by Professor Gao Yan, the leader of Systems Science of Business School. In the afternoon, three sub-forums on Modeling, Simulation and Optimization of Complex Systems, System Analysis Theory and Application, and optimization and Management of Urban Sustainable Transportation System were simultaneously held online.

USST Celebrates the 114th anniversary
On October 31st, the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology welcomed the 114th anniversary. Considering prevention and control the COVID-19, almost 300 alumni participated in the celebration for USST, and thousands of teachers, students at the university and alumni gathered on the Internet to celebrate the birthday of USST.
At 5 p.m. on November 1st, approximately 7,000 USSTers from fifteen countries and regions like German, French, Japan, Singapore, America, Canada, Hong Kong, Macao in five continents like Asia, Europe, North America, Africa, Oceania sent the sincerest blessings to the birthday of USST in many ways.
The 114th anniversary of USST met the 60th anniversary of School of Energy and Power Engineering. The Advanced Dynamics Equipment Technology Institute was also unveiled at USST. Some other activities like Energy and Power Innovation Technology Development Forum were also held.

USST Scored Record High in National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
From November 17th to 20th, the final of the 6th China International College Students ‘Internet+’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship competition was held at South China University of Technology. Sun Chunlan, vice-premier of State Council gave some guidance to the organizing committee of competition. Zhong Denghua, deputy minister of Ministry of Education, Lin Huiqing, former vice minister of Ministry of Eudcation, Wu Yan, director of department of higher education, attended the awarding ceremony. After the fierce competition, two USST’s entrepreneurship teams respectively won one golden prize and one silver prize, scoring record high in the higher education main track and “A Red Journey to Building Young Dreams” track. Sun Yuedong, deputy Secretary of Party Committee of USST, personally went to Guangzhou to provide instructions and encouragement for the team members.
China International College Students ‘Internet+’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship competition is an important carrier and platform to deepen the educational reform in innovation and entrepreneurship. From 2015 to 2020, it was held once a year. With a theme “I dare, I can”, the competition involves 1473 thousand projects from 4186 universities of 117 countries and regions as well as 6310 participants. Finally, 300 teams joined in the final, and a total of 143 projects were given golden prizes to. The project “Brighten the Future —Development and Industrialization of Laser-driven White Emitter” won the golden prize in higher education main track. The project “Industrial Chain of Oil, Fruit, Vegetable Chips Promoted by Vacuum Frying and Deoiling Machine” won the silver prize in the “A Red Journey to Building Young Dreams” track . At the same time, These are respectively the only one golden prize in higher education main track and the sole one silver prize in “A Red Journey to Building Young Dreams” track that was achieved by Shanghai representatives. Up to now, our school has won the golden prize in China international College students “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for 2 consecutive years, amounting to 2 golden prizes, 4 silver prizes, and 1 bronze prizes, scoring record higher and higher over the past four years.

USST Scholars Successively Creates High-level Achievements
Recently, the selected projects funded by 2020 national science fundation for distinguished young scholars were announced. Prof. Ai Lianzhong from School of Medical Instrument and Food Engineering entered the list of funded scientists. Clarivate Analytics released its 2020 list of “High-cited Researchers”. Prof. Weiguoliang from the College of Science of USST was selected into the interdisciplinary field. “Highly cited researchers” were chosen by Biblio-metrological experts in Clarivate Analytics by analyzing the citation data of such 21 disciplinary branches as natural science and social science from data base Web of Science. The list announced these researchers with the most highly-cited papers in all areas, meaning that they gained the greatest recognition in terms of their citation influences. Chemical looping steam reforming (CLSR) using oxygen carriers (OCs) catalysts including a cyclic two-step stage by alternating air and fuel steps has been extensively recognized as a highly efficient method for hydrogen production. Recently, Dr. Binlin Dou and his group published research on: “Renewable hydrogen production from chemical looping steam reforming of biodiesel byproduct glycerol by mesoporous oxygen carriers” in “Chemical Engineering Journal” (Available online 4 November 2020) that contributes to the development of sustainable energy technologies with a particular emphasis on new and next-generation hydrogen technologies from biomass. Recently, an international academic publication giant Elsevier officially announced the awarding list of 2019 Sloan Outstanding Paper Award. The phase 1 Results of Smart Campus Construction Announced
On November 12, the phase Ⅰ results of the Smart Campus of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology were available to society and the public. Since the initiation of the project, USST endeavored to build a digital university, to enhance the governance, management, ecology and security of the campus, and to build a high-quality campus in which teachers and students jointly build, govern and share the fruits of the campus, and everyone can feel the warmth of the campus. The construction of Smart Campus is the key to speeding up the modernization of university governance, promote the in-depth management reform and the high-quality development of the school. It is the “focus” to realize the modernization of education and embody the teacher-student orientation so as to make the majority of faculty and students have a sense of gains and happiness.
Ding Xiaodong, president of USST, pointed out in a keynote report entitled “Digital USST--the Way to Digital Transformation of a University”, the significance of building a smart campus does not lie in the epidemic prevention and control itself. Through the construction and improvement of USST where “all can be done in one network”, “management can be integrated in one network” and “ideal learning can be achieved in one network” in USST, the accurate and scientific level of management services will be enhanced, and information technology and digital governance promote the campus to be more “intelligent” so that students will be more willing to ponder and eager to learn in such an environment.”

USSTers made achievements in National competitions
On October 31, the National Finals of the 3rd "Zhisheng Cup" National College Students Financial Technology Innovation Ability Competition was conducted online through the "Zhisheng Cloud" platform, and was monitored by Tencent conference in real time. The team No.1 consisting of undergraduates of 2018 from the Department of Finance, Business School of USST, won the first prize. On November 10th, the Awarding Ceremony of the 6th China Foreign Language Micro-Class Competition National Finals and Micro-Class Design and Application Seminar was held in Changsha. Faculty from the School of Foreign Languages of USST won 2 national second prizes and 1 national third prize,scoring the highest record of the competition. On November 14th, the national final of the 11th "Blue Bridge Cup" National Software and Information Technology Professionals Competition was successfully held.
After being selected through USST competitions and Shanghai municipal competitions, USST Students won 37 prizes in the national finals, including 5 national first prizes and 15 national second prizes, 11 national third prizes, 7 national excellence awards. At the same time, at the first teaching competition for young teachers of arts and design in Shanghai colleges and universities, the course "Special Product Design" by Miao Ke from the Industrial Design Department of the School of Communication and Art Design won the third prize in the young teachers’ teaching competition.

Why to Nominate Prof. Ai Lianzhong and Prof. Wei Guoliang

Recently, the winners funded by 2020 National Science Fund for distinguished young scholars were announced. Prof. Ai Lianzhong from School of Medical Instrument and Food Engineering entered the list of winners.
The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars is set up to promote the growth of young science and technology talents, speed up the cultivation of an array of academic heads in world’s scientific frontline. The fund was established in 1994 and gave appraisal once a year. The appraisal procedure was strict and only funded fewer than 10% of applicants. For more than two decades, the national science fund has become national iconic and influential high-end projects funding young science and technology talents, and an important platform for personal growth of young scholars.
Clarivate Analytics released its 2020 list of “High-cited Researchers”. Prof. Weiguoliang from the College of Science of USST was selected into the interdisciplinary field since the first nomination in 2019.
“ Highly cited researchers” were chosen by Biblio-metrological experts in Clarivate Analytics by analyzing the citation data of such 21 disciplinary branches as natural science and social science from data base Web of Science. The list announced these researchers with the most highly-cited papers in all areas, meaning that they gained the greatest recognition in terms of their citation influences.

A Brief  Introduction of Prof. Ai Lianzhong and Prof. Wei Guoliang

Ai Lianzhong, executive vice dean of graduate school, director of discipline construction office, professor of School of Medical Instrument and Food Engineering, doctoral supervisor, USST,director of Shanghai Food Microbes Engineering Technology Research Center, director of China Food Science Technology Academy and Youth Committee, director of China Domesticated Animal Products Processing Academy. He has been listed into many national-level and ministerial-level talents plans. He mainly engaged in the breeding and use of fine food microbes, R& D of dairy products and polysaccharide. He presided over and undertook more than 20 projects such as “973” Plan Project, National Natural Science Foundation. He won 11 sci-tech prizes for the projects he chaired or involved in. He won 56 authorized invention patents. He published over 200 research papers, among which 100 or more were listed in SCI. He engaged in the compilation of 2 English works.

Wei Guoliang, dean of College of Science, professor, doctoral supervisor, USST, German Humboldt Scholar, American Mathematical Commentator, deputy editor of International SCI Index Journal Neurocomputing,director of Chinese Association of Automation. In recent years, he has made a series of achievements in industrial complex system control and filtering, network control and signal processing, sensor filtering, moving object location, robotic control, visual optimization, big data and AI algorithm. He has presided over 3 national natural science funds, and published more than 100 academic papers in international journals like Automatica, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Circuit and Systems, IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, Systems and Control Letters, among which 19 papers were highly cited.
