A Month (October) of USST Officially Released

☆Preface

Faced with the complex and repeated pandemic, USST take rigorous measures in the prevention and control to ensure that every teacher and student enjoy good health and full safety and USST plans like teaching, research and talent cultivation are successfully implemented. The sixth Plenary Session of the Eighth Committee of USST was held to promote a new development for the new campus, which indicates it must be aimed for teachers and students’ aspirations for a beautiful campus and to build a high-level university where everyone can participate in the campus governance and management and share successes, warmth and the sense of belonging. During this special period, 2020 Sports Culture Festival and Track and Field Games were successfully held through positive planning and cooperation. Athletes worked hard, united and cooperated, fully demonstrating the enterprising sportsmanship and the demeanor of USST-ers. USST-Dijiang Group Intelligent Manufacture Innovation Center was established and Dijiang Education Funds-Giving Ceremony was held. In recent years, USST has provided full supports for the development of alumni enterprises which also benefit our school in turn, forming a virtuous circle and interactive mechanism between two units. Besides, Academician Yan Chuliang was appointed as Distinguished Professor of USST, which means an opportunity for them to contribute to introduction of high-level talents, science and technology research, and application for national foundation focused on major strategic needs, and give impetuous to passing on engineering characteristics, mooring at discipline frontier and occupying high industrial point. President Ding Xiaodong was invited to the National Smart Campus Construction Summit in Suzhou and addressed a keynote speech. In the meeting, he introduced the smart campus construction of USST and elaborated on the ideas and measures. USST has invested more in disciplinary construction, scientific research, talent training, and exchange &cooperation, achieving remarkable results in promoting the construction of a high-level university construction. Under the guidance of academician Zhuang Songlin, a high-level article entitled "Application of Terahertz Imaging and Spectroscopy in Cancer Diagnosis" has been published in Biomedical Engineering Frontier by Professor Peng Yan from the Terahertz Technology Innovation Research Institute. Dr. Zhang Jie from School of Energy and Power Engineering has published a paper called “The evolution of catalytically active calcium catalyst during steam gasification of lignite char” in a top journal Carbon in the field of engineering technology. USST and HAW Hamburg signed a new cooperation agreement to consolidate the achievements of the cooperation, and strive to achieve more in the scale and level of collaboration. USST students have made outstanding accomplishments in the 5th "Think Youth" and the 11th "Blue Bridge Cup" competitions, demonstrating the performance of USST-ers as well as the achievements of practical education.
In the previous issues, we have introduced those USSTers who have achieved fruitful results in scientific research, such as Academician Gu Min from School of Optical-Electrical and Computer Engineering, Professor Liu Ping from School of Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor Yu Hongliu from School of Medical Instrument and Food Engineering. This month features Professor Gu Zhengxian from College of Science who is a model in showing how to conduct himself, enlighten students and pursue academic study. Having worked as a teacher for 34 years, Prof. Gu takes pride in teaching and can find much pleasure in it, seeing great achievements in higher education. Among the faculty members of USST, he is a "model" highly respected and praised by others. He has been awarded the "Golden Teaching stick" of USST for three times, and has been named as the "Good Teacher in the mind of students" for 12 times, and even he was conferred upon the honorary title from 2005 to 2016 in a row.

High-quality Development of School Powered by USSTer-centered principle
To draw a better blueprint for future development, and bring the benefits of high-level development to all faculty and students, the 6th plenary session of the 8th CPC Committee of USST was held at No.1 Room of Graphic Information Centre.
The session vowed to see that the principle of putting faculty and students first should be incorporated into the whole process of the high-quality development of USST, reflected in communal practice and feelings of faculty and students, to create a brighter future for USST. USST should promote all-rounded human development, and establish a better, higher and broader platform, making school become a dream stage. USST should give full play to the masters’ spirits of all faculty and students, guide them to participate in school governance in many ways, spur their collective wisdom and responsibility. USST should push ahead the major engineering construction with advanced ideas, and contribute to some changes in campus with dedicated efforts. USST advance smart campus construction, prioritize and share public resources, space, and platform. USST should let the benefits of development reach more faculty and students, spread more kindness to each detail, corner of campus construction, and service management. USST should build a spiritual home with wealth& woe, practice core socialist values, and make efforts to foster spirits and character of USST with 100 years. To realize the construction of USST campus based on collaboration, participation and common interest, all colleges and departments should implement the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, uphold the strategy of talents promoting development, motivate innovative development of the discipline, modernize the system and capacity of governance in university, consolidate wisdom and strength of joint governance by faculty and students, build a spiritual home aspired by all USST-ers.

Academician Yan Chuliang Appointed as USST Distinguished Professor
On October 20th, Academician Yan Chuliang was appointed as Distinguished Professor. The ceremony was held in Room 243 of School of Mechanical Engineering.
President Ding presented Yan Chuliang the certificate of distinguished professor. Yan extended sincere thanks to the presentation. He pointed out that with a long history and distinct disciplinary features, USST carried out effective work in study of intelligent manufacture fields such as machine tools, vehicles. President Ding Invited to National Intelligent Campus Construction Summit and Address Keynote Speech
On October 16th, the Summit Meeting for National Smart Campus Construction, with a theme entitled “Break campus boundaries, explore future universities”, was held in Su Zhou. USST President Ding Xiaodong was invited to give a keynote speech at the meeting.
In President Ding’s speech, he elaborated on the ideas and measures of USST advancing smart campus construction. He pointed out that the world has undergone profound changes. Higher education should be positive and well-placed to adapt to these changes, to achieve integrated and innovative development of information technology and itself. As a municipal multidisciplinary key university, USST, driven by data and applications, remains sensitive to changes, responding to them with well-judged actions, and is ready to adjust the approach when necessary, to construct an educational information system which is suitable for Shanghai's economic, social and educational development.

New Cooperation Agreement Signed between USST and HAW Hamburg
On the afternoon of October 20, the signing ceremony of the agreement between USST and HAW Hamburg was held in Room 232, No.516 campus, Jungong Road. President Ding Xiaodong, USST, and President Michael Teuscher of HAW Hamburg, signed a new agreement on cooperation between the two universities. In the meanwhile, Ding Xiaodong presided over the 2020 joint committee meeting of Sino-German College. Prof. M. Röther of HAW Hamburg, Prof. M. Hoch of Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences, Prof. M. Wick of Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Art and Prof. R. Schreiner of OTH Regensburg attended the meeting via ZOOM in Germany.

2020 Sports Culture Festival and Track and Field Games Held
On October 23rd, 2020 Sports Culture Festival and Track and Field Games of USST was held on the 516 Jungong Road campus. All school leaders as well as teachers and students of all colleges attended the opening ceremony, which was presided over by Vice President Zhang Hua.
The president Ding Xiaodong delivered an opening speech. He stressed that sports serves as an important way to improve people's health, and also an important method to fulfill their aspirations for a better life and promote all-rounded human development. USST has long been attaching great importance to sports, and most of the teachers and students have also maintained a fine tradition of enthusiasm for sports and exercise. In the days of fighting against the epidemic in 2020, USSTers have taken active actions to fully demonstrate the spirit of unity, cooperation, hard work and enterprising sportsmanship, fully demonstrating the demeanor of USSTers! At present, the school is comprehensively promoting the integrated reform of "Three All-round Education" and is about to achieve a new round of development in the "14th Five-Year Plan". The school will further accelerate the construction of stadiums and sports facilities, continue to deepen the reform of physical teaching education, and create a strong sports cultural atmosphere with great efforts which provides a better sports environment and conditions for teachers and students.
In the track and field competitions, the athletes worked hard, united and cooperated, to which the audience extended enthusiastic services and cheers.

New Development in International Exchange in October

One new international cooperative agreements were signed in October. By now, there have formed a cooperative partnership with USST and 177 other universities and institutions in 34 nations and regions. Field inspection of higher education quality certification for international students has been completed successfully.

USST Scholars Successively Published High-level Papers
Directed by academician Zhuang Songlin, professor Peng Yan from Terahertz Technology Innovation Research Institute published a paper entitled Terahertz Imaging and Spectroscopy in Cancer Diagnostics: A Technical Review in journal BME Frontiers. In this paper, the project team summarizes recent studies of THz imaging and spectroscopy in cancer diagnosis from the past 5 years. They also present auxiliary methods to improve the SNR or enhance the THz signal. These works demonstrate the promise of using THz technologies for cancer diagnosis. Dr Zhang Jie from School of Energy and Power Engineering, as the first writer and correspondent, Published a research paper entitled “The evolution of catalytically active calcium catalyst during steam gasification of lignite char” in top journal Carbon on engineering technology together with Tang Jia, an engineer from Ningde Amperex Technology Limited, Liu Lijuan, a lecturer from School of Physics and Microelectronics, and Prof. Wang Jie from Department of Chemical Engineering for Energy of East China University of Science and Technology. The research proved the associative form and evolution of catalytically active calcium in producing hydrogen via gasification of lignite char.

USST-Dijiang Intelligent Manufacture Innovation Center Established
On October 19th, USST- Dijiang Group Intelligent Manufacture Innovation Center was established and Dijiang Education Funds-Giving Ceremony was held at USST. Lin Jianhua and Zhang Dawei, Dean of Scientific Technology Development Research Institute signed the cooperation agreement, and together unveiled the nameplate for the innovation center. On behalf of USST, Meng Baoquan, Director of Alumni Working Association, Secretary of USST Education Development Fundation was presented 20 million RMB. Wu Jianyong awarded Gratitude certificate to Dijiang Group.
Lin Jianhua hoped that focused on key technologies, and competitiveness, the innovation center cooperated by USST and Dijiang could optimize the project and strengthen the relationship. He also hoped that Dijiang could do everything in return for USST. Wu Jianyong pointed out that USST would make vigorous efforts to promote alumni enterprise development, deepen synthesized integration of industry, learning and research, shape a university model which contribute to the faster and better development of alumni enterprise so as to foster a fine circulation and interactive system of the cooperation between school and enterprise, helping more alumni enterprise grow bigger, serve major national and local needs, and make due contributions to socio-economic development.

USST Students Make Outstanding Achievements in College Student Competitions
USST Students Make Achievements in Fifth “Think Youth” Competition and Eleventh Blue Bridge Cup. The Results of the Fifth Think Youth - Shanghai International Digital Creation, Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition, hosted by Shanghai Municipal Education and Health Work Committee and Shanghai Municipal Education Comission, have been recently announced. Students from College of Communication and Art Design of USST have scored outstanding achievements, winning 11 first prizes, 14 second prizes, and 6 third prizes in the four categories of product design, animation, visual design, and environmental design respectively. In the 11th “Blue Bridge” competition, USST won the 25 first prizes, 24 second prizes, and 12 third prizes in software, 11 first prizes,18 second prizes, 13 third prizes in hardware, 1 first prize and I third prize in art design, achieving a better result of the competition.

Why to Nominate Professor Zhengtian GU

Professor Gu Zhengtian from College of Science in USST was granted the title “advanced publicity model” to be a righteous person, a teacher and a scholar in 2020 campaign by the Shanghai Party Committee of Education and Health Work and Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. Professor Gu not only devoted his lifetime to college physics teaching, but also shaped a model to be a righteous person, a teacher and a scholar in one’s life. In his 34 years’ teaching career, he had always been working on the frontline of college physics teaching, turning the most boring and difficult courses of students’  mind into a widely popular lecture. He also turned the physics classroom into a talents-nurturing lecture by spending 800 hours on blackboard-writing every year with dedicated efforts. He spared 8 hours or more every day to provide students and young teachers with teaching guidance, after-class meeting, livestream class and Q&A tutoring, making the spirits of imparting knowledge and nurturing people delivered from one generation to another.

A Brief Introduction of Professor GU
Recently, Prof. Gu has presided over and undertaken more than 10 ministerial-level scientific projects, including national nature science foundation and key projects of science and technology research of the MOE. He published more than 180 papers, most of which are cited by SCI and EI. Important achievements are released in optical-related top journals; 3 international monagraphs are published; 3 national invention patents are authorized.
In 2018, he won the first prize of National Teaching Award. In 2015, he won the second prize of Shanghai Blackboard Writing Design Award. In 2014, he was selected into a good teacher trusted by the Party and People. In 2011, he was conferred upon the title of the 6th Teacher of Teaching of higher education. The program Physics chaired by him was rated as Shanghai excellent courses.He has become a well-respected in the mind of teachers from 2005 to 2016 in a row. In December of 2002, he was honored with the title of Dawning Scholar.
